He was a brick mason most of his life, an apple grower, and sold vegetables and apples to many faithful customers over the years. He was loved and adored by his family and friends. He was a loving and caring husband, a kind and gentle father and grandfather, and an honest and trusted friend. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Almeta C. Thompson; his children, Doug and Susan Thompson of Roanoke, Cindy and Jay Windel, and Robin and William Walters, all of Bent Mountain; his grandchildren, Erin and Ashley Thompson of Roanoke, Jamie, Kristie and Joey Windel, and Jenny, Jared and Jacob Walters, all of Bent Mountain; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Shirley Thompson, and Howard and Christine Thompson, all of Bent Mountain, and Dalton and Ocie Thompson of Pilot; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Dennis Conner of Bent Mountain; special neighbors, Willie and Nancy King, and honorary grandchildren, Stephanie Perdue and Bradley King. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Union Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Gary Edwards, the Rev. Paul White and the Rev. Greg Mills officiating. Interment will be in Copper Hill Church of the Brethren Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Leukemia Society or to Mount Union Church of the Brethren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Wood Funeral Home, Floyd. Arrangements by Wood Funeral Home. on May 10, 1997.3

Maynard was born in Roanoke County November 26, 1927 and lived in the area all his life. He was the son of the late Oscar G. Manning and Hattie M. Bowles Lawrence. Maynard was employed with General Electric for more than 30 years. He served in the United States Navy, was a Mason, a member of the Shrine, and enjoyed genealogy. In addition to his parents, Maynard was preceded in death by his son Barry Lynn Manning; brother Vincent Manning and a sister, Janie Smith. He is survived by his long-time friend, Evelyn Hazelwood; son Timothy Manning of Roanoke; daughter Karen Nicholson of Blacksburg; grandson Adam Manning; sister and brother-in-law Ocelia and Hubert DeWeese of Bent Mountain; several nieces and nephews. Maynard’s family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, Wednesday, April 19 at Lotz Funeral Home, 1001 Franklin Road, Roanoke. A graveside service with military honors celebrating his life will follow with Pastor Ben Peyton officiating at Evergreen Burial Park. (Head of the River Primitive Baptist Church). on May 23, 2019.3

He was born in Roanoke, Va., son of the late Maynard and Elizabeth Conner. Sam was also preceded in death by his brother, Rodney Conner, and grandson, Louie Kearns. Sam served over 20 years in the United States Navy and was a member of the Bedford VFW Post #1082 and the Bedford Moose Lodge #1897. He loved Blue Grass music and making musical instruments and was an avid fisherman. Sam is survived by his wife, Remona Mefford Conner; sons, Lance Kearns and wife, Win, Chance Kearns and wife, Rachel, and Sam Huff and wife, Robin; brothers, James Conner and wife, Nancy, and Perry Conner and wife, Valerie; and grandchildren, Gabriel, Tyler, Cillian, Samuel, and Patience. A Celebration of Life Gathering will take place from 2 until 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2020, at Oakey's North Chapel with Military Honors at 4:30 p.m. on September 12, 2020.3
