He was born on February 18, 1923, in Floyd, Va., to the late George and Margie Austin. He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years and the love of his life, Glenna Vest Austin; his precious grandson, William 'Alex' Altizer; his sister, Beulah Whitlock Vest; and brothers, Hanfred Austin and Arnold (Madie) Austin. Versal is survived by and will be greatly missed by his daughter and son-in-law, Deneise and Richard Altizer; brother, Dr. Fred (Vivian) Austin; brothers-in-law, Shelven 'Sonny' Vest and Hubert Harman. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was a wonderful son, husband, daddy, grandpa, brother, and uncle. He was a faithful and active member of Huffville Methodist/Brethren Church as long as his health permitted. He loved his farm and especially enjoyed raising beef cattle. He also loved to garden and share his produce with his neighbors. He was a kind and generous individual who was willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Versal proudly served his country in World War II as part of the United States Navy. After returning from service, he attended school to become a professional meat cutter which he was for more than 60 years. He retired from Armour and Co. after 25 years. He also worked through the years before and after his retirement at Angle's, Wade's and Food Lion. We would like to thank our family and many friends for their continuing love and support. A special thank you goes to the many angels at Radford Health and Rehab for their tender loving care of Dad and our family. Thank you also to Good Samaritan Hospice who has been so caring and helpful. The family will receive friends on Friday, January 26, 2018, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2018, at 11 a.m. in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Dan Whitlock, Dr. Fred Austin, and Pastor Darren Landon officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg. Memorial contributions may be made to an ongoing Scholarship for Campers at the UMC Camp Alta Mons established in memory of his grandson Alex Altizer. She is survived by her loving husband and angel of mercy of 24 years Shelven (Sonny) Vest. It's with the greatest of admiration the family wants to recognize the love, care and dedication that Sonny provided our Mother. In addition she is survived by two sons; Rev Daniel W. (Sabrina) Whitlock and David (Kathy) Whitlock; daughter, Debra (Charlie) Statzer; two stepsons, Darryl (Robin) Vest and John (Mary) Vest; step-daughter, Annette (Mike) Battle; three grandsons, Waylon Whitlock, Ethan (Jennifer) Whitlock and Will (SaZha) Statzer; three step-grandsons, Eric (Amanda) Janney, Travis Boyd and Kenny Moore; three step-granddaughters, Kimberly (Andrew) Nichols, Amanda (Joey) Belcher and Alexis Vest; two brothers, Dr. Fred Austin and William Versal Austin; numerous loving nephews, nieces and great- grandchildren. Interment in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family would like to thank all the caregivers and the Carilion Clinic Hospice staff for all their kind deeds and comforting care throughout Beulah's illness. on September 23, 2017.4

Fred was an ordained United Methodist minister and served in Holston Conference United Methodist churches in Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee for 38 1/2 years. He retired from serving as District Superintendent of the Wytheville District in June, 1996. After retirement he filled in for United Methodist, Presbyterian, Christian, Lutheran, Episcopal, and Baptist churches when needed. He was proud to serve as pastor of Castle Rock Baptist Church in Pembroke for four years. Fred was married to Vivian Light on March 7, 1953. To their marriage of 70 years God added two sons, Roy Stephen and wife, Gail, and Timothy Lewis and wife, Pamela. He was blessed with four grandchildren, Heather Teta (Brian) of Rockville Centre, N.Y., Brad Austin (Lauren) of Charlotte, N.C., Kate Stauffer (Kyle) of Grottoes, and Adam Austin of Harrisonburg, as well as nine great-grandchildren. Interment will be held at Birchlawn Burial Park. on March 11, 2023.11

Friends may call anytime after 1:30 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home Sunday, October 1, 2000, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday evening. Funeral services will be held Monday, October 2, 2000, at Horne Funeral Chapel with Rev. Tom Martin, Dr. Fred Austin, and Rev. Kimball Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Iddings Cemetery in the Terry's Fork section of Floyd County. The family request in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Christiansburg Rescue Squad, Box 176, Christiansburg, Va. 24068 or New River Valley Hospice, 111 West Main St., Christiansburg, Va. 24073. Oh! what a comfort he was to us, in every way possible, ready to lend a helping hand. God only knows our aching hearts. He also leaves to mourn brothers and sisters: A.F. and H. D. Sowers, Mrs. J. K. Cole and Mrs. Otho Martin. Funeral services were held at Mountain View Church by several Elders, admist a large congregation of sorowing relative and friends. Interment was in Wilson Cemetery by his dear companion...      Eva Irene Epperly was buried at Jacksonville Burial Ground, Rt. 8, 0.25 miles south of Floyd, Floyd Co., Virginia.7 She was born on April 18, 1919 at Virginia.9 She married Maurice Harvey Conner, son of Alfred Letcher Conner and Eva Florence "Evie" Lawrence, on August 31, 1941 at Floyd Co., Virginia.1,10,7 As of August 31, 1941,her married name was Conner. Eva Irene Epperly died on August 16, 2013 at Virginia at age 94.7 She Eva E. Conner, 94, of Check, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 16, 2013. She was born of the late Hiley and Blanche Epperly, of Huffville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice H. Conner; and one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Calvin Bain. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Edwin C. and Norma Jean Conner, Harvey L. and Lessie B. Conner, and Clinton L. and Diann V. Conner; daughters and sons-in-law, Helen C. and Earl Hubbard, Marcia C. and James Turner, and Penny E. Conner; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; five great- great- grandchildren; sister, Margie Beckleheimer; sisters-in-law, Mazie Wimmer and Jewell Pannell; special friends and caretakers, Ann Bower, Rose Rakes, Deidra Webb, and Kelly Mcallistor; and her cat, Tiger.A private graveside service will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2013, at Jacksonville Cemetery with Pastor Roy Turpin officiating. Interment will follow in the Jacksonville Cemetery. on August 17, 2013.7

He loved riding his 4-wheeler, sun tanning and spending time at his camper, westerns and funny videos. He was a truck driver, and business owner. He was born to Maurice Harvey Conner and Eva Irene Epperly on October 22, 1947.He was preceded in death by his father and mother, and his sister, Peggy Bain. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lessie Bolt Conner; his daughter, Jessica Belcher; grandchildren, Shayla Belcher, Ariana Belcher, Hadassah Belcher, Samson Belcher, Boaz Belcher, Yissachar Belcher; his son, Christopher Conner and wife Dorothy Conner; grandchildren, Xander Conner, A.J. Conner, son, Eric Conner; siblings and spouses, Edwin Conner, Helen Hubbard, Marcia and James Turner, Penny Conner, Clinton and Diann Conner. Special Thanks to Hospice Nurse Becky for her wisdom, comfort and care.
