Wally was born June 8, 1913, in Woonsocket, S.D., to the late Judge Burnace W. and Elizabeth Smith Baer, who was a fine boogie-woogie piano player. He was raised and educated in South Dakota. Wally was united in marriage to Clarice Carroll on Dec. 3, 1938, in Pierre, S.D. They made their home in South Dakota and raised one daughter. Over the years, Wally served in the U.S. Army at Camp Crowder, Mo., and then returned to move his wife and daughter to Hot Springs, S.D., where they resided for several years. Wally progressed into managing the Blue Bell Lodge in Custer State Park in South Dakota. The three Baers were off to new adventures in many different places including Seattle, Portland, Ore., Coronado, Calif., and finally Fairbanks. This is where Wally found his true calling. He loved Alaska and promoted the state at every opportunity. He worked at the Daily News-Miner and managed the Chamber of Commerce. He was active in politics and eventually signed on to direct the A-67 Historical Park Project in Fairbanks. This included the building of a small zoo where the main attraction was the two bears, fondly named Wally and Crissie in honor of their community achievements. A-67 (Pioneer Park) remains a thriving tourist attraction. Among his personal interests, he enjoyed being a lifelong member of the Elks and the Masons. He was also a fine public speaker and a true raconteur. He loved touting the wonders of Alaska and socializing with his Poets Club in Fairbanks. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland on Friday, Sept. 19. on September 17, 2003.4
