Jennifer Renee Short was buried at Henry Memorial Park, 8443 Virginia Avenue, Oak Level, Henry Co., Virginia.7 She was born on July 12, 1993 at Franklin Co., Virginia.7,3,4 She died on August 15, 2002 at Wentworth, Rockingham Co., North Carolina, at age 9.7,3 She MOURNERS GATHER TO REMEMBER 9 YEARS OF LIFE - FAMILY, FRIENDS AND A COMMUNITY SAY GOODBYE TO JENNIFER SHORT
When Jennifer Renee Short was 5 years old, her father's uncle, Frank Arrington, promised her a fishing trip. He held out his hands to show her the size of the fish they'd catch, and her eyes lit up. Every time they spoke afterward, Jennifer would ask him, "Uncle Frank, when are we going fishing?" But Jennifer and her granduncle never took that trip. Arrington told that story to national media eight weeks ago as he pleaded for his missing niece's safe return. He told it again, his voice halting, as Jennifer's family made preparations for her funeral. Saturday afternoon, more than 250 people came to Martinsville Church of God to say goodbye to a 9-year-old girl whose death has become a national tragedy. A national search for Jennifer began Aug. 15, when her parents, Michael and Mary Short, were found shot to death. That search ended in sorrow Oct. 4, when a DNA test confirmed that Jennifer's body had been found in North Carolina. Pictures on a poster board outside the sanctuary showed aspects of Jennifer's life that a public riveted by the story of her disappearance has never seen: Jennifer grinning up at the camera, wearing a new pair of in-line skates. Jennifer sticking her tongue out as she climbs into the back seat of a car. Jennifer dressed in her baseball uniform, holding a bat as if ready to swing. Jennifer standing with a rainbow behind her that appears to lightly touch her head. The funeral service concluded with a video that began with pictures of Jennifer as a baby asleep in her crib. It ended with footage of her relatives gathered in North Carolina at a bridge, now covered with flowers and teddy bears, next to where Jennifer's remains were discovered. Three ministers officiated at the service. As dozens of the Shorts' relatives sobbed quietly, Pastor Jackie Poe assured them that in God's arms, Jennifer's life will never end. The community in Henry County has been torn apart in the past year, by layoffs, by unemployment, by corruption in the county government, said the Rev. Morris Fleischer. But, like the tragedy of Sept. 11 that united the citizens of New York, the deaths of Jennifer and her parents brought the people in Henry County together, he said. He compared the killings of the Short family to a terrorist attack. The Rev. Kevin English echoed Fleischer's words, calling the killings an "act of terrible evil." He addressed Henry County Sheriff Frank Cassell and the police officers from the counties of Franklin, Henry and Rockingham, N.C., who came to serve as honorary pallbearers. He prayed for God to grant them both peace and wisdom as they continue their hunt for a suspect in the slayings. Teddy bears and dolls were lined up beneath and to either side of the closed casket. One bear held a note that read, "Sweetheart - we'll miss you." As the funeral procession rolled slowly down Liberty Road, a young boy alongside the road held up a sign that read "Jennifer Always." "Deep down everybody was hoping against hope that she was alive," said Betty Martin, a Martinsville resident who came to show her support for the Short family. She was waiting for the burial ceremony to begin at Henry Memorial Park in Bassett Forks. "This whole thing just shouldn't have happened. "It is like a terrorist thing in our community," she said. "Things like that normally happen in big cities, but this was here." She agreed with the Rev. Fleischer that the Shorts' tragedy has drawn the community together. "It is a very Christian community, but with a country flavor, so you know how it is - if you don't know them you know somebody that did." The Shorts' relatives chose for Jennifer to be laid to rest next to her mother. At the graveside ceremony, a bird handler released six white doves: three for Michael, Mary and Jennifer Short; three for the Holy Trinity. After the ceremony, Jim Whitehead, one of Jennifer's uncles, talked of how angry and frustrated he's become since the killings. He spoke of how he wants the nation not to forget Jennifer and her parents, and how he wants tougher laws against crime so that what happened to Jennifer won't ever happen again. And he talked about the doves. As he watched the birds circle together, he said, he knew that Jennifer's spirit, and her mother's and father's, were with them as they disappeared into the sky. on October 13, 2002.8
