Charles Aquilla Lucas Sr. Charles A. Lucas, age 86, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 1, 2014 in Hemet, California. Charles was born on Friday, May 25, 1928 in Roanoke, Virginia to W. D. and Margaret Lucas. Charles proudly served our country as a member of the United States Marine Corps. He served as a Deputy Sheriff for Orange County for more than 15 years. Charles loved the outdoors and after retiring, he moved to Mountain Center where he and Charlotte could experience the beauty of the mountains and the wildlife daily. Charles is survived by his loving wife, Charlotte; 3 daughters; and a sister. She was preceded in death by her parents Waskey and Margaret Shelton Lucas, her daughter Becky, husband Dean, brother Charlie Lucas and son-in-law Joey Martin. Left to cherish her many memories are her daughter Kathy Croy Martin and her grandson Lucas Dean Martin; Brothers-in-law; W.D.(Tiny) Croy, Don Croy, nieces Eileen Lucas Chantrill, Elly Lucas LeMaster, Linda Lucas Spear, Carolyn Croy, Sandra Gearheart Cruise, Sharon Gearheart Graham, Donita Croy Price, Cindy Croy Shrader; and nephew Chris Croy. A graveside service will be held at Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg, VA, with Pastor Mike Derflinger presiding. Kathy and Lucas would like to acknowledge and express their heartfelt gratitude to Sue’s lifelong angels on earth Peggy Chafin, Marietta Hanks and Lois Jean and Marvin Jones. State police said Rebecca Lynn Croy, 17, of 200 Ash Drive, Christiansburg, was fatally injured in the crash at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. She was a passenger in a car driven by Frank Wilson Jr., also of Christiansburg. Wilson's car collided with the car of Paul Motley, 1518 Mountain Heights Drive, Salem, at the intersection of Virginia 419 and Interstate 81, according to state police. Injuries to Wilson and Motley were slight and neither was hospitalized. Miss Croy had graduated from Christiansburg High School last week. She is survived by her parents Mr. and Mrs. H. Dean Croy; a sister, Kathy Croy. All are of Christiansburg. on June 15, 1970.7

He taught band in Greenville County at Eastside High School and Greenville Middle School from 1998 to 2002, at which time he retired and moved back to the Charleston area to manage the Charleston branch of Pecknel music. He left Pecknel in 2008 and was working as a substitute teacher in the Berkeley county schools at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Susan DeLong Early of Goose Creek, his sister Susan F. Early of Bristol Tennessee, sister Jane Early Powell of Athens, Ga., brother Stephen Early of Charlottesville, VA, six nephews and four nieces. on March 13, 2011.8

He served in the US Army National Guard from 1970 to 1976. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and golfing with his friends. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and spending time at the lake where he taught his sons, and nieces and nephews how to water ski. Mr. Plymale is survived by his wife, Gwen Dean Plymale; sons, W. Leigh Plymale Jr. and his wife Dawn of Salem, and Dean P. Plymale and his wife Victoria of Covington, La. He is also survived by his grandsons, Nicholas I. and Nathan D. Plymale; a sister, Joyce P. Murray; nieces, Kathy Minnick and Ellen Wentzel; nephews, Mark Minnick and Jeff Minnick, and their families. on January 26, 2014.2
