John William West was buried at Jacksonville Burial Ground, Rt. 8, 0.25 miles south of Floyd, Floyd Co., Virginia.2 He was born on January 3, 1921 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.2,4 He married Esther Mae Whitlow circa 1941.9 John William West died on January 30, 2016 at Virginia at age 95.2 He John William West, 95, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2016. Born in Salem, Va., on January 3, 1921, he was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Esther; parents, Terry and Ima West; brother, Terry West; sister, Eura Banner; and sons-in-law, William Harry and Clyde Smythers. He is survived by three devoted daughters, Linda Harry, Joan West Bork and husband, Casey, and Becky Smythers; five loving grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, Suzanne Cipolla and husband, Rob, and children, David and Caroline; Dr. Brian Mitchell and wife, Sue Ann, and children, Brianna, Emma Sue, and Annslee; Dr. Angela Mitchell Miss and husband, Stephen, and children, Abigail and Stephen Patrick; David Harry and Linda Arnold; and Erin Smythers and husband, Jeff, and their children, Ryan and Kristina. He is also survived by two brothers, Richard West and his wife, Bobbie, and Frank West and his wife, Jenny; one sister, Mary Alice Turner; and numerous nieces and nephews. John served two tours of duty in the United States Army, first in Panama prior to World War II and in Occupied Germany during the war. Returning to Floyd, Va., after the war, he worked as Game Warden for the Virginia Wildlife Commission for 35 years. He was a member of the Methodist church, the Masonic Lodge, and the VFW.Following his retirement, he and Esther moved to Roanoke to be nearer to family. A dedicated husband, father and grandfather, he cherished family gatherings. Always health conscious, he continued daily exercises and healthy eating all of his life. An avid gardener, he shared vegetables and fruits with family and friends. A voracious reader, he enjoyed discussing politics, world events, and history. However, it was his sense of humor and excellent memory that made him a master storyteller of family history and favorite jokes. He entertained his family and friends with events of his childhood during the depression, his tours of duty in the army, life as a Game Warden, and humorous insights into life. During his last years at his home and at the Richfield Assisted Living Center, he showed us all how to live with laughter and acceptance. Fiercely independent, he approached his tasks with a positive attitude. The family is grateful to his special, favorite caregivers who helped us keep him comfortable and smiling, Angie, Monica, Trina and Casey. He will be greatly missed. A Funeral Service will be held at noon on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Oakey's South Chapel, Roanoke. Chaplin Gary Kingery will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Jacksonville Cemetery, Floyd, Va. on February 3, 2016.2
