His death also listed as Dec 16, 1864 and Dec 18, 1863. Served under General Longstreet. His death was due to being struck by a cannon ball. He was buried by his brother Francis. Letter from Adolphus-
January 21, 1863 Shandoah Valley, London County, Virginia - Dear Wife and children, I imbrace this opportunity of wrighting you a few lines to let you know that I am well. Hoping these may find you like wise. I havent anything strange to write you. We broke up our camp at Culpeper C.N. on 15th of this mot. and have had a very harde march in geting here though our neighbors boys have stood it very well. As for the enemy I can not tell you much about him. I understand that Hooker is moving in the direction of Washington. General Ewell captured Millroys Army the other day wich was about 6000 but Millroy made his escape by running. Also I am informed that Ewell is in Maryland and I think that we all will move on after him. General Ewell commands Jacksons Old Corpse and I have no dout of him being equal to old Stonewall. I do not think we will have any fighting this side of the Potomac. Shortly though if we cross i expect to see harde times but I hope not. In fact this movement seems to be a secret. So I cannot tell what is going on. You have just jest as good a chance to learn all about the war as I do. Save what I see and I haven't seen a Yankee since I left Suffolk save a few prisoners. They keep moving on before us so we to keep out of our way and if they keep on this Hookers Parlson will soon be driven out. Look on the next sheet. /s/ D.E. Cole. (there is no "next" sheet - at least if there was one, it did not survive the years. This original letter is in the files of Charles M. Cole III, Katy, Texas. He Died during the Civil War at Cambell's Station, near Knoxville, Tennessee. He was born in 1825 at Buncombe Co., North Carolina.1 He married Marianna Lyons on September 17, 1848 at Murray Co., Georgia.2,1 Adolphus Ervin Cole died on November 16, 1863 at Knoxville, Knox Co., Tennessee.1
