Born Feb. 25, 1920, in Thorpe, he was the son of the late David Hawks and Flora Stone Hawks Combs. Mr. Hawks entered the U.S. Navy to serve during World War II. While in the service, he was aboard the USS Franklin Aircraft carrier. He was awarded the good conduct medal and several other ribbons and medals. For over 40 years, Mr. Hawks was employed by the U.S. Steel Corporation, having worked at the power plant and retiring from the cleaning plant. He was a member of the UMWA Local 7135 at Gary. Mr. Hawks was a devoted Christian, a faithful and hard working member of the New Covenant Pentecostal Holiness Church on Highland Avenue in Princeton. He was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class, director of audio, served as choir director for many years as well as being a deacon for many years. His knowledge of audio and video equipment allowed him to serve many families by videoing weddings, anniversaries, funerals and other special occasions. He was preceded in death by a half brother, Ray Hawks. Left to cherish his memory, his loving and caring wife of 56 years, Margie Elizabeth Furrow Hawks; his four children, Edward C. Hawks Jr. and wife, Sharon of Lakeland, Fla., Jim Hawks and wife, Donna, Jerry Hawks and wife, Kathy and Dana Anderson and husband, John all of Princeton; nine grandchildren, Emily Baches, Brian, Justin, Rusty, Jody, Kayla, Jacob Daniel Hawks, Kia Hebb and Micah Musick; two great-grandchildren, Rachael Elizabeth and Rebekah Baches; sister, Virginia Spangler of Waynesboro, Va; half sister, Ethel Fitzgerald of Waynesboro; brothers, Albert Hawks and David Hawks both of Gary, and Daniel Bob Hawks of Waynesboro. On Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Flineral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton a service to celebrate the life of Mr. Hawks will be held with the Revs. Paul Flirrow and Keith Linkous officiating. Those left to cherish her memory, her two daughters, Sandra Kay Sparks of the home, Darlene Henderson and husband, Mark of Indian Valley, Va; grandchildren, Melvin "Skip" Dalton, Brandon L. Surviving are his fiancee' Kim Lawrence; beloved dog, Daisy May Link; second mother, Pat Heaton; and many uncles, aunts, cousins, neighbors, and friends too numerous to mention. She is survived by a son, Terry Wright of Roanoke; a daughter, Kathleen Wright and son-in-law, Robert Smiley of Goochland; a daughter, Martha Wright of Rosewell, Ga; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Jean Hall and Estelle Wright of Shawsville and Garnett Ross of Salem. Mrs. Wright was a member of Belmont United Methodist Church for 56 years and was active in community service organizations. Visitation will be Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's Vinton Chapel. Funeral services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Belmont United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sam McPhail officiating. Burial will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Belmont United Methodist Church, 806 Jamison Ave., SE, Roanoke, Va. 24013 or the Presbyterian Community Center, 1228 Jamison Ave., SE, Roanoke, Va. 24013. Surviving are his wife, Ruby Bones Wright; son, Terry Wright, Roanoke; two daughters, Martha Wright, Centreville, and her beloved daughter, Katherine Wright, and Kathleen (Kathy) Wright and her husband Bob Smiley, Goochland; two step-grandsons, John and Scott Smiley; one brother and sister-in-law, Wilford and Mary Wright; sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Eugene Hall; sister-in-law, Estelle Wright; also numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Belmont United Methodist Church, 12 noon, Thursday, December 11, 1997, with the Rev. Sam E. McPhail officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Oakey's Vinton Chapel on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on December 10, 1997.2
