She and her younger sister, Debbie, grew up in several towns in Virginia and West Virginia as her father climbed the corporate ladder at Norfolk and Western Railway. She graduated high school at Cave Spring High School in Roanoke, Va., and entered Mary Washington College in Mathematics. After transferring to Virginia Tech, she graduated in 1970 with BA degrees in Economics and History, and a minor in Mathematics. Upon graduation, she worked for a few years at the Fifth Planning District Commission in Roanoke and the Model Cites program in Richmond, Va. Returning to graduate school, Judy enrolled at the Darden School of Business at The University of Virginia. She graduated with a Master's degree in Business Administration in 1975, and subsequently worked for Mead Corporation, Hewlett-Packard Corporation, and Bendix Corporation as a Human resources and training manager. In 1980, Judy married Thomas Wood of Roanoke, a classmate of hers at Virginia Tech, and they moved to Davenport, Iowa, where their daughter, Katherine Randolph Wood was born a year later. Shortly after, they moved to Kansas City where Judy worked and cared for a very ill Katie and Tom's son by his first marriage, William Wesley Wood. Judy was a devoted and caring daughter, sister, mother, stepmother, and wife. She provided opportunity and encouragement for all around her, and had many friends from all walks of life.
