He served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960, stationed for 15 months in Nuremberg, Germany. He retired from General Electric Company with 33 years of employment, but most importantly, considered himself a happy farmer working with cattle and serving several years on the Board of Directors for the Roanoke County Farm Bureau. Les is survived by his wife of 62 years, Patricia Fralin Perdue; his daughter, Susan Duff and her husband, Hal, of Winchester, Va; granddaughter, Sarah Pankus and her husband, Robert, of Charleston, S.C., and their sons, Liam, Nolan and Finn; granddaughter, Mary Doumont and her husband, Patrick, of Savannah, Ga., and their son, Theodore; sister, Sherrie King and husband, Roger; brother, Jim Perdue; along with a special cousin, Stanley Perdue; nieces and nephews; and good friend, Jack Reynolds. The family would like to extend appreciation to the Virginia Veterans Care Center for their excellent care these past three months. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. on May 24, 2019.5

She was born on February 12, 1950, to the late Mary Effie Hall and Curtis Daniel Franklin. Emma was united in Holy matrimony to Edward C. Woodard, who survives. Emma Jean was a faithful wife and mother. She was active in her community and devoted her life to helping others find and follow Christ. Her courageous heart and generous spirit were a guiding light that shined brightly everywhere she went. Emma was a graduate of Bowie State University. She was licensed and ordained as a minister and served as Interim Pastor: at Roanoke First Church of the Brethren from September 1993- December 1993, at Troutville C.O.B from September 1994-June 1995, and at Cloverdale C.O.B. from September 1995-July 1996. She later served as Associate District Executive Minister at Virlina District from January 1, 2000-April 21, 2017. Following that she served as Interim Pastor at Daleville C.O.B. from October 1, 2017- December 31, 2017, and at Jones Chapel from June 1, 2018-December 31, 2019. She served as Interim Pastor at Bethany C.O.B. from July 15, 2020 - August 31, 2022, and finally became the Pastor of Bethany C.O.B. from September 1, 2022-January 10, 2024. A Servant's Heart~ She did her best! In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her brother, Stuart Franklin; niece, Angela Franklin; sister-in-law, Carolyn Franklin, and father-in-law, Cornelius Dawlson Woodard. Those left to cherish Emma Jean's memories are her loving and devoted husband, Edward Cornelius Woodard; daughter, Hope Elizabeth Woodard Staton; son, Nathan Cornelius Woodard; and grandson, Cornelius Cash Woodard. Stuart is survived by his wife Edna Franklin; children Dean Franklin and Melissa Saunders; his 5 grandchildren and their spouses Ashley Wrenn (Adam), Brittany Cordero (Luis), Diana Eckerberg (Matt), Zach Saunders (Hailey), and MaryBeth Buswell (Connor); his 7 great grandchildren Angela Williams, Sophie Saunders, Liam Saunders, Mayson Cordero, Eleanor Wrenn, Brooks Franklin Saunders, and Paislee Cordero; brothers Russell Franklin and Ray Franklin; and sister Emma Jean Woodard (Ed). Holt, 95, of Rock, formerly of Princeton, died Wednesday morning in a Bluefield hospital following a brief illness. She was a member of the first Methodist Church in Princeton and was born at Oakvale, the daughter of the late Andrew and Matilda Thornton. She was preceded in death by her husband, R. E. L. Holt, and a son, John Clayton Holt. Survivors include two sons, Herbert Holt of Toledo, Ohio, and Chauncey Holt of Yucaipa, Calif; five daughters, Mrs. J. K. Hilsheimer of Huntington, Mrs. G. E. Shumate of Princeton, Mrs. M. V. Engleman of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. J. R. Johnson of Waynesboro, Va., and Mrs. J. G. Conner of Rock; 18 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Directory Chapel in Princeton with Rev. James Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Wood Cemetery in Princeton. on August 15, 1968.5

     Arthur Philmore Thornton was buried at Resthaven Memorial Park, 1917 West Main Street, Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.6,7 He was born on May 7, 1879 at Ingleside, Mercer Co., West Virginia.2,5,6,7 He married Felitia Pearl Bruce on December 18, 1906 at Welch, McDowell Co., West Virginia.5,3 Arthur Philmore Thornton died on September 9, 1954 at Northfork, McDowell Co., West Virginia, at age 75.6,3,7 He Northfork, Sept. 10 - Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Northfork Methodist Church for Arthur Philmore Thornton, 75 of Northfork, who died Thursday night at his home after a short illness. He was a member of Luther H. Clark Lodge 94, AF&AM; Ivanhoe Commandery, Knights Templar, at Branwell; and Beni Kedem Shrine in Charleston. He was also a member of the advisory board at Northfork Assembly, Order of Rainbow Girls. He came to McDowell County in 1901 and played a part in the early development of the Pocahontas coal field. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Pearl Bruce Thornton; a daughter, Mrs. W. W. Atkinson or Switchback; three sons, Bruce Thornton of Warwick, Va., H. Sanders Thornton of Northfork and E. Earl Thornton of Newport News, Va; two sisters, Mrs. E. L. Holt of Rock and Mrs. C. W. Bower of Princeton. Rev. William Byrd will conduct the swervice and burial will be in Princeton. The body is at Bennett mortuary here. on September 11, 1954.3

     Belle Velaria Davis was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.2,4,5 She was born on January 14, 1873 at Mercer Co., West Virginia.1,6,2,4 As of February 18, 1892,her married name was Thornton.1 She married James Henry Thornton, son of Andrew Jackson Thornton and Matilda Jane DeWeese, on February 18, 1892 at Mercer Co., West Virginia.1,4 Belle Velaria Davis died on September 15, 1948 at Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia, at age 75.2,4 She Mrs. J. H. Thornton, 75, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. W. King, 501 Walnut street, Princeton, at 1:30 o'clock yesterday morning, following an illness of the past year. Mrs. Thornton was born on January 14, 1873, in Mercer county, the daughter of the late Phrhuss and Kathern Bowling Davis of Oakvale. She married James H. Thornton at Oakvale on February 18, 1892. He preceded her in death in 1936. Mrs. Thornton is survived by the following children: W. F. Thornton of Norfolk, Va., B. W. Thornton of Kermit, W. Va., H. D. and A. B. Thornton, both of Clarksburg; Mrs. C. L. Hauck of War, Mrs. E. P. Clark of Indianapolis, Ind., and Mrs. King of Princeton. She also is survived by fourteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Smith of Newton, W. Va., and Mrs. A. D. Schoonover of Hookersville, W. Va. Mrs. Thornton had lived at Princeton for the past two years, moving there from War. She was a member of the War Methodist church. The funeral will be conducted at the home of her daughter, Mrs. King in Princeton, at 4 o'clock this afternoon (Thursday), by the Rev. Robert Fuqua of War, assisted by the Rev. L. D. Roe of Princeton. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery at Princeton. Grandsons will act as pallbearers and members of Mrs. C. C. Sarver's circle at Princeton will act as flowerbearers. The body will Fredeking-Seaver mortuary to the King home at 10 o'clock this morning. on September 16, 1948.4
