He was the loving and devoted husband of Marilyn (Dianne) Mayo Eanes for 45 years. Born in Lynchburg on July 22, 1935, he was the son of the late Walter S. Eanes, Sr. and Constance Huffman Eanes. He was retired from VDOT after 36 years of service, a member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church, Lynchburg Coin Club, Lynchburg Amateur Radio, Lynchburg Sports Car Club, and the Civil Air Patrol at New London Airport. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, CDR Clinton Scott Eanes, USN and wife Inga; a daughter, Melissa Eanes Blomquist and husband, Scott; four grandchildren, Caleb, Asher, Eden and Jordan Blomquist and also Walter knew of a fifth grandchild due in August. He is also survived by his mother and father-in-law, Roy C. Mayo Jr. and wife Martha; two brothers-in-law, Roy C. Mayo III and wife Cheryl, Timothy W. Mayo and wife Sandi; two cousins, Jane Walton and husband, Ezra and William Huffman. The family wishes to thank the many friends and family, caregivers and volunteers at the Hospice of the Hills for the love and support shown to Walter and family. Burial in Meade Memorial Cemetery. on February 2, 2012.2

He was a Director for the Virginia Tech Foundation and the Virginia Tech Alumni Association, and was serving as President and Director of Hotel Roanoke Foundation, Inc. He was a past President and Director of Credit Marketing and Management Association and also served as Chairman of the Legislative Committee. Mr. Hoback was awarded the Virginia Tech Alumni Association "Alumni Distinguished Service Award" in 1993. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 3, 1994, at Oakey's North Chapel, 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Stonewall Cemetery, Copper Hill, Va. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Colonel Harold N. Hoback Scholarship Fund, Virginia Tech Foundation, Account #083793, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Va. 24061-0336. Hoback all of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Laura Elizabeth Crutchfield, Samantha Christian Hoback, Macie Elizabeth Hoback; also surviving are brothers, Stephen L. Thompson, M.D. of Rustburg, Colonel Robert A. Thompson, Retired, of San Antonio, Texas; sister-in-law, Mrs. Dean H. Young; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at her home. Memorial services will be at the Northminster Presbyterian Church, 11 a.m. Monday, March 15, 1999, with the Rev. David A. Kirk officiating. Home Buried Under Slate Pile; New Roads in McDowell Badly Damaged. WELCH, June l0. - State highway construction received a set-back here yesterday when several miles of newly graded road were washed out by a cloudburst on the North fork of the Elkhorn river. Roads east and west of Welch were blocked. In some places being under five or six feet of water. A coal tipple at Rolfe and a number of small houses along the river bank at Keystone, Northfork and Superior were washed away, and basements of about 20 stores were flooded. Damage in the Elkhorn valley was estimated to reach at least $100,000. Much damage was done in Mercer county where eight lives were lost and bridges and sections of rail lines washed away. The fatalities occurred on Crane creek near the tipple of the American Coal company. A huge pile of slate, undermined by the water, crushed onto a house at the foot of the pile, burying seven people. The eighth victim was a member of a rescue party. The dead: Mrs. Shellmon C. Vest and 5-year-old son; Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher Dewese, Mrs. Toney Dewese and two daughters, 2 and 5 years of age, and Amelio Premoveno, the last named being a member of a rescue party. It may be several days, it was said, before the bodies can be recovered from under the slate. on June 10, 1924.9

She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Poff of Copper Hill, Va; one son and daughter-in-law, Sheldon and Barbara Vest of Copper Hill, Va; two grandsons and wives, Michael and Carol Poff of Sterling, Va. and Kevin and Christy Vest of Copper Hill, Va; one great-granddaughter, Kacie Vest of Roanoke, Va; two great-grandsons, Dylan Vest and Nicholas Vest of Copper Hill, Va; one sister, Myra Peters of Floyd, Va; and one sister-in-law, Doris Ingram of Floyd, Va. A private graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 with the Reverend Elbert Lee Naff and the Reverend Pete Bain officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening at the home of Sheldon and Barbara Vest. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Stonewall Cemetery in care of Mrs. Dorothy Janney, 719 River Ridge Road, S.E., Copper Hill, VA 24079. Arrangements are being handled by Gardner Funeral Home, Floyd. on June 19, 2007.6
