When Cheasapeake & Ohio passenger train number 5, west bound, struck a bad rail near Dixon, seven miles east of Roncerverte shortly before 11 o'clock last night, two were killed and two were slightly injured in the derailment which followed. R. D. Womack, of Hinton, and C. H. Gurley, postal clerk, of Staunton, Va. are the dead and their bodies were removed to Clifton Forge today. The two injured men, a postal clerk and a passenger, were rushed to a hospital at Clifton Forge, but it was reported today their injuries were not serious. When the engine struck the de-fective rail, it turned over on it's side across the track, the postal car and combination coach were also derailed and upset and two day coaches were derailed but did not overturn. The sleepers remained on the rails and were later hauled back to a switch and routed over different track and arrived in Charleston after about four hours delay. All the passengers were badly shaken up and the members of the train crew in the baggage car and the engine had narrow escapes from serious injuries if not death. C. D.(sic) Poteet, fireman, who was in the cab with the unfortunate engineer, escaped uninjured. on October 7, 1920.5 He died on May 12, 1941 at age 60.4

Ronald C. "Ron" Lively was buried at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 1917 West Main Street, Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.3 He was born on February 12, 1944 at West Virginia.6,3 He married Sandra "Sandy" Stanley circa 1983.5 Ronald C. "Ron" Lively died on August 31, 2006 at Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia, at age 62.6,3,5 He PRINCETON — When Ron Lively died, he was officially Princeton’s vice mayor, but the city and friends who will miss him paid tribute to Lively Sunday with many more personal titles and dear memories. As mourners gathered to bid farewell to the man most of the city knew as “Sleep,” they remembered Lively as a dedicated public servant, a friend, a traveler, a peacemaker and even a prankster. Most of all, they said he was a gentleman. Lively died Thursday, Aug. 31, at the age of 62. He had battled cancer since 2002, but had continued to serve as a city councilman and as mayor until June, when declining health forced him to leave the post. Mayor Dewey Russell, who prompted Lively to run for council in 1999, immediately appointed him vice mayor. “I always felt like Ron would just be an excellent council member. If I can say I did anything to help Princeton, that [convincing Lively to run] is one of the things that stands out,” Russell said. “As a mayor, he really took that job to heart.” "Ron was just a fantastic guy,” Councilwoman Pat Wilson said. “He was a wonderful man and mayor. He always treated me with so much respect, and I knew I could always depend on him.” City Manager Wayne Shumate said it was his pleasure to have known and worked with Lively. “Ron was a great community leader and a public servant. He worked tirelessly for the city of Princeton,” Shumate said. “He was a good man, who treated everyone with respect and dignity.” Dependability and dedication to his friends, family and city were the legacy Rev. Rob Buchanan spoke of during the memorial services before a full chapel at Seaver Funeral Home. “Ron loved the city of Princeton. He had a love to see Princeton grow and progress,” Buchanan said, sharing stories Lively’s daughters Sarah Lively and Tara Lively-Mitchell told of trips around the city, sight-seeing, watching for new development in his hometown. Those drives usually ended at Dairy Queen, where Buchanan said Lively would purchase a trademark banana split, one of his favorite treats. He spent most of his life in the city he adored. After graduating from Princeton High School and Concord College, as well as serving a stint in the U.S. Air Force, Lively worked as a realtor at Lively Realty Company, the business his father, Cecil Lively, founded. Ron Lively became the broker in 1986. Throughout his work in business and city government, Lively was often recognized for outstanding service. He was a member and former president of the Mercer County Board of Realtors, where he was honored with the 1995-96 Dedication and Service Award and the 1999 Richardson Award. The West Virginia Association of Realtors nominated him as Realtor of the Year in 2001, and he served as Concord University adjunct instructor. In 1999, he was elected to City Council as an at-large candidate, a post he won and held onto, serving one full year as vice mayor and four consecutive years as mayor. Lively also served on the Princeton Zoning Board of Appeals, Princeton Community Hospital Board of Directors, Princeton Board of Park and Recreation Commissioners, Princeton Sanitary Board, Princeton Planning Commission and the West Virginia Municipal League Board of Directors. A long-time sports enthusiast, Lively played basketball for Princeton Senior High School, alongside Jerry West and Rod Thorn and continued to compete in college. When he no longer took the court himself, Buchanan said Lively cheered other athletes on, particularly if they were part of a West Virginia University team. Twenty-three years ago, when he married Sandy Lively, the couple went to a West Virginia bowl game as a honeymoon. And, Sunday, as Buchanan spoke, a blue and gold banner hung from a nearby flower arrangement. “There will never be another one like him,” Sandy Lively said through tears, greeting friends at the ceremony. Lively enjoyed seeking new adventures in different places. Over the years, his travel took him to Hershey, Pa; California, Mexico, the Caribbean, Paris, Venezuela and more. But, when the trips were over, Lively returned home to Princeton. “He loved this city,” Sarah Lively said. This week, city leaders said they missed their friend and colleague more than they could express. “Thursday, Aug. 31, was a very sad day due to the death of Ron Lively. He was a great gentleman, father, husband, friend and realtor. He was an excellent mayor and councilman for the city of Princeton,” Councilman Marshall Lytton, who visited Lively shortly before his death, said. “He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Ron had a long battle with his illness. He served the city of Princeton well. There were many meetings that he attended while he was mayor that he was in a lot o pain, but he would not give up. He felt like he had to be at the meetings because he was the mayor. “He was always trying to make people happy and trying to make Princeton a better place to live.” Lively’s friends said he found faith before his death. “Ron made the most important decision of his life approximately two weeks ago, when he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior,” Lytton said. Councilman Dewey Large said this week there was little left to say. “Ron Lively was a great man, and he was a good man,” Large said. “Princeton is going to be at a loss without him.” And, while city leaders will find someone to take Lively’s position, Councilman Chad Skeens Caldwell said no replacement will equal Lively’s service. “Mr. Lively — not only did he leave huge shoes to fill, but his shoes cannot be filled because he left such a path through his communities,” Caldwell said. He said he was honored to have shared his term on city council with Lively. Lively is survived by his parents, Cecil B. and Ruth Light Lively; his wife, Sandra Stanley Lively; three daughters, Jennifer Lynn Lively of Roanoke, Va., Sarah Elizabeth Lively of Lewisburg; Tara Lee Lively-Mitchell and her husband Ryan Mitchell, of Johnson City, Tenn; one granddaughter, Leigh Ann Lively of Roanoke, Va; mother- and father-in-law Carl and Vinecia Stanley of Renick; several aunts, uncles, and cousins. on September 8, 2006.5
