MotherAntionette Ester "Nettie" McClure1,2,3 b. August, 1870, d. February 26, 1940
His Social Security Number was 516-44-0813.4 Clarence A. Hopkins Clarence was born near Hill City, SD at the home of his parents, Robert Allen and Antoinette Ester (McClure) Hopkins. In 1913, Clarence moved with his parents, six brothers and sisters to a homestead near Old Piniele, Montana. They left Hill City with a team and wagon so heavily laden with canned goods and other necessities that the entire family had to walk. The Hopkins family arrived at the home of Clarence's older sister, Mrs. Josie McCrorey on the Fourth of July, 1913. Josie McCrorey's homestead joined that of Clarence's parents. Clarence started working at an early age. His first job was herding sheep for his brother, Harvey, when he was only seven years old. Clarence worked for various ranchers in the Piniele community. In 1943, he worked for Steven Williams, whom is the last person Clarence worked for north of Hammond, Montana. On the 16th of December 1947, Clarence married Lois Lenore Williams in Belle Fourche, South Dakota. In 1949, Clarence and Lois purchased the ranch from Steven Williams and raised cattle together till their retirement in 1982. Richard and Clarice Owens, old friends and good neighbors, bought the ranch from Clarence and Lois. The couple remained at the ranch until June 1984 when they moved to Ekalaka, Montana. Clarence and Lois enjoyed their time in Ekalaka where friends and family would often drop in for a cup of coffee, cookies, and a game of cards. They especially enjoyed spending time with good friends, Leslie and Nellie Dean; playing cards with much laughter and love. In December of 1996 Clarence and Lois moved into their first brand new house in Gillette, Wyoming to be closer to their daughter, son, and granddaughters. Clarence enjoyed picking out colors and decorating their new home. He was especially proud of the red brick front exterior that he picked out with his granddaughter Danielle. As always, they made new friends, particularly with the couple that lived next door, Curtis and June Gingery; whom they enjoyed many evenings playing cards with. Clarence loved spending time with his family and friends. He loved playing cards and couldn't resist teasing everyone in a good-hearted manner. He was always their for his family and was proud of their accomplishments: proud of his daughter Elaine when she received her teaching degree, of his daughter Gay when she graduated from nursing school, of his grandson Don when he completed diesel mechanic school, and of Todd Bitner when he completed the Police Academy. Clarence shared a special love of music with his granddaughter, Dixie. He was proud of her when she was chosen for the Wyoming All-State Marching Band and performed in the 2000 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, the Bush/Cheney inauguration in Washington D.C., and the Wyoming Ambassadors of Music trip to Europe. Clarence and granddaughter Dani enjoyed a special bond, as they where two peas in a pod. Aside from his family, Clarence loved the wide-open spaces of Southeastern Montana. He enjoyed animals, such as, a well-matched team of horses. Clarence embraced life. He never let bad times get him down. He was a man of few words. He taught his family to never give up and never give in. Clarence's last wish was to pass away in his home with his family beside him, and return to the windswept prairie of his youth. Clarence faced death with the same courage, dignity, and humor that he displayed in life. He taught by example and not words. As always, his last thoughts were for his family. Clarence is survived by: his loving wife of 55 years, Lois L (Williams) Hopkins of Gillette, Wyoming, three children, son Benjamin Clarence Hopkins of Pablo, Montana, daughter Elaine Lenore (Hopkins) Dowdy and Larry Dowdy of Winslow, Arkansas, daughter Gay Ann (Hopkins) Bitner and John H. Bitner III of Gillette, Wyoming, grandchildren: Donald and Kim Dowdy of Bentonville, Arkansas, Todd and Michelle Bitner of Gowen, Michigan, Heather and Holly Bitner of Greenville, Michigan, Dixie Lewton-Bitner of Gillette, Wyoming, Danielle Lewton-Bitner of Gillette, Wyoming, seven great-grandchildren: Jonathon Dowdy of Bentonville, Arkansas, Blake, Haley and Trent Bitner of Gowen, Michigan, Desiree, Trey Bitner of Greenville, Michigan, and Dakota Marshall Marsaa of Fargo, North Dakota, one sister, Era Richards of Belle Fourche, South Dakota, Bother-in-law, Ira Williams of Ekalaka, Montana, Sister-in-law, Helen (Jim) Rosencranz of Belle Fourche, South Dakota, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, nine siblings and nine brother and sister-in-laws, and a granddaughter Gloria Marsaa.3 He was buried at Boyes Cemetery, Carter Co., Montana.5 He was born on November 30, 1907 at Hill City, Pennington Co., South Dakota.4,3 He married Lois Lenore Williams on December 16, 1947 at Belle Fourche, Butte Co., South Dakota.3 Clarence A.
