     James Raymond Philpotts James served as a Private, 853rd Engineer Battalion, Aviation, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He resided in Roanoke County, Virginia prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on March 18, 1943 in Roanoke, Virginia. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Retail manager and also as married. James was a passenger on the H.M.T. Rohna. The Rohna and four other troop ships left Oran in French Algeria with cargo and troops. Off Béjaïa, Algeria the convoy was attacked by an estimated 60 German Luftwaffe Heinkel 177's. One of the 177's, piloted by Hans Dochtermann, released a glide bomb that hit Rohna on her port side and she eventually sank. 1,138 men were killed, including 1,015 U.S. personnel. The attack is the largest loss of US troops at sea due to enemy action in a single incident. 35 U.S. troops of the 2,000 originally embarked later died of wounds. James was declared "Missing In Action" in this sinking during the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.9 He was born on March 2, 1909 at Roanoke, Virginia.4 He married Annie Magdalene "Madge" Creasy on August 13, 1936 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.3 James Raymond Philpotts died on November 27, 1943 at age 34; Lost at sea on the H. M. T. Rohna in the Mediterranean Sea.6

Benner, Jr. was born March 12, 1918, in Gulfport, Mississippi, and passed away on Tuesday, September 2, 2008 in El Paso. With his parents, he moved to El Paso at the age of two, and later attended Alts Vista Grade School and Austin High School. After graduating from Austin High School at age sixteen, he hitchhiked to Texas A & M where he enrolled in classes and joined the A & M Corps of Cadets. After earning a degree in Architectural Engineering from Texas A&M (Class of 1938), he joined the Army Air Corps (forerunner of the U.S. Air Force) where he received his commission as a 1LT, his pilot rating, and became a member of the 8th Air Force. He was a B-17 bomber pilot in the 549th Bombardment Squadron, also known as ' The Bombing Devils,' Arch was one of the original 'kindergarten pilots' because, as squadron commander, he led numerous missions over France and Germany before his twenty-fifth birthday. For his valiant service to his country, including missions flown during the Battle of Normandy, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Presidential Unit Citation, and EAME Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Service Stars. After World War II Arch was stationed at several different bases; he returned to El Paso where he served at Biggs Air Field as assistant chief civil engineer. When Biggs closed, he was reassigned to Kelly Air Field in San Antonio as chief civil engineer until his retirement in 1978. He and his wife, Bonnie, then returned to El Paso where he lived until his death. His parents, A. V Benner Sr. and Flora Philpotts Benner, preceded him in death. His survivors include his devoted wife of thirty-nine years, Bonita B. Benner, whose loving care enabled him to live a much longer life at home; his younger brothers Pat Benner and Bob Benner; his daughters and sons:, JoAnn Benner Elder, Patricia Benner Baltzell, Ronald E. Ramirez, Renee Ramirez Gravatt, Teresa Ramirez, and Richard P. Ramirez; eleven beloved grandchildren and twelve precious great-grandchildren; as well as many old friends. Chapel Service will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, September 8, 2008 at Funeraria Del Angel Martin Central, 3839 Montana Ave. Interment will follow to Ft. Bliss National Cemetery. on September 7, 2008.6
