David Lewis Morgan was born on July 4, 1936 at Mount Carmel, New Haven Co., Connecticut.1,2 He married Nell Wilson Pearman, daughter of Elbert Wilson "Bert" Pearman Jr. and Verna Lewis Sisson, on June 14, 1958 at Shawsville, Montgomery Co., Virginia.4,1 David Lewis Morgan and Nell Wilson Pearman were divorced on August 11, 1967 at Hampton, Virginia.2 David Lewis Morgan died on January 26, 2016 at Hampton, Virginia, at age 79.3 He Hampton - David Lewis Morgan, 79, died Tuesday, January 26, 2016. Born in New Haven, CT he had been a Hampton resident since 1958. A graduate of Virginia Tech, David worked 16 years for Newport News Shipbuilding before becoming a security officer at Surry Nuclear Power Station where he worked for over 20 years. Betty volunteered many civic hours and received recognition from Roanoke City for serving as a member of the Advisory Board of Public Welfare in 1971. She was instrumental in fund raising and establishing the current building for the Williamson Road Library during Mayor Roy Webber's term. She was awarded a certificate of appreciation from the American Cancer Society in 1988 for nine years of volunteer service. She was the first woman elected and ordained an Elder at Northminster Presbyterian Church where she also served as the first woman Clerk of the Session. Being a mother with three children in public schools, she spent countless hours with PTA activities, working bake sales and transporting kids here and yonder in the old station wagon. Mom and Nana, we love you. The family thanks Doris Montgomery for her wonderful and dedicated care of Betty over the past several years. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may make memorials to Northminster Presbyterian Church, 3911 Greenland Avenue, N.W., Roanoke, Va. 24012 or to the American Cancer Society, 2840 Electric Road, Roanoke, Va. 24018. A private graveside service will be held. She was born May 29, 1925 in Floyd, the tenth of eleven siblings to her late parents James H. Sumpter Sr. and Addie Harmon Sumpter, always staying connected with her beloved family. She was a proud graduate of Floyd County High School class of 1942, and member of the championship girls basketball team. After serving in clerical work in Washington D.C. during World War II she attended Virginia Baptist Hospital School of Nursing, graduating and licensed as a Registered Nurse in 1948. While nursing at Bluefield Hospital she met the love of her life, her late husband Ben M. Hawes as members of First Baptist Church of Bluefield and were married in 1956, moving to Roanoke shortly after. She served as an RN at the old Lewis Gale, Jefferson, and Community hospitals, finally retiring in 1989 as a charge nurse at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Her mission in life was the care and healing of her patients, family and friends in the most selfless and giving way. She was a loyal and faithful member of Beacon Baptist Church in Salem VA. Preceding her in death were infant daughter, Sarah Beth Hawes, sisters, Vera Dehart, Alice Sumpter, and Katherine Elder, brothers, Melvin Sumpter, Curtis A. Sumpter, James H. Sumpter Jr., Joe Sumpter, and Bill Sumpter. Missing her deeply til we meet again in heaven are sister, Marjorie Drumheller; brother, Robert Sumpter and wife, Frieda as well as cousin/sister, Carol Harrell; children, R. Brent Hawes and wife, Iris, Thomas B. Hawes, both of Roanoke, Ben D. Hawes and wife, Faith of Bluefield W.Va; loving grandchildren, Danielle, Jonathon, Jocelyn, and Alexander; as well as a great many precious nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff and nurses of Avante at Roanoke for their compassionate care for mom and our family. Graveside services following at Jacksonville Cemetery in Floyd. on September 18, 2011.2

Hawes and wife, Faith, Bluefield, W.Va., Brent Hawes and wife, Iris, Salem, Thomas Hawes, Roanoke; four grandchildren, Dannielle and Jonothan Hawes, Bluefield, W.Va., Alexander Hawes and Jocelyn Wohlford, Salem; two sisters, Mary Lou Biddle and Eunice Rose, both of San Diego, Calif.
