Ray Stewart, who worked behind the scenes to help establish Pittsburgh's reputation as one of the leaders in the burgeoning medium of television, died Tuesday of complications from a fall at his home in Oakland, N.J. He was 84. Born in Princeton, W.Va., Mr. Stewart graduated from Syracuse University and the University of Denver and served for three years in the Navy. He helped pioneer the art and craft of television in other cities and was recruited in 1959 by WIIC-TV (now WPXI) as the station's public affairs director. His family followed him to Pittsburgh in 1960 and settled in West View. A producer who worked mostly off-camera, he was recognized locally as host of a weekly travelogue, "Magic Carpet," and for his documentaries on religious life in Pittsburgh. Bill Cardille, another TV pioneer who was the voice that signed WIIC onto the air in 1957, remembered Mr. Stewart as a quiet and dedicated producer. "He was really a laid-back individual," said Cardille. "Very low-key. He worked on some special programming for us and did some on-air work, but he really was one of those quiet, behind-the-scenes guys who keep everything running smoothly." After leaving WIIC, Mr. Stewart worked in film production and, in 1971, opened the Chircosta photography studio on Smithfield Street, which is still run by the Stewart family. Toward the end of his life, he lived in Las Cruces, N.M., and moved to New Jersey in 2001. "He traveled around the world in the early days of television," said his son, Ronald W. Stewart of Pittsburgh. "I guess he was like other dads, except we got to watch our dad on Sunday mornings on TV." In addition to his son, Mr. Stewart is survived by four other children, David Stewart of Pittsburgh, Thomas Stewart of Altamont, N.Y., James Stewart of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Pamela S. Tucker of Collingswood, N.J. on July 26, 2003.1
