Born to Caleb and Clara Board Hale as their second son, he grew up as a farm boy in the Check area of Floyd County. As a teenager he moved with his family during the depression to Roanoke. Here he entered the public schools and then later the work force. He met and married the woman he cherished throughout his life, Martha Blount. That union produced two daugters, Dawn and Dreamer. Lynwood was a reserved type person. When he spoke, he spoke profoundly and wisely. He had a sense of humor that was ever present and had the gift of making anyone who was in his presence feel comfortable. Possessing a melodic speaking voice, he was also given the gift of song and sang beautifully. A man always in control of his temperment, he never showed rage or anger or raised his voice. He did't have to. His eloquent words were enough. He served in the South Pacific in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a coxwain bringing down Japanese planes. He wrote home to his older daughter who had not yet started school that when he came home he would take her and her little sister swimming, on picnics, and to the movies. He kept that promise. This was a man who possessed an artistic ability to create. He could make a cap gun holster from a purse for his younger daughter, fabricate items from leather, repair furniture or build a new piece, or draw, including a portrait of himself. He was an outstanding son, husband, and father. He prized his relationships with his parents and his wife and children over everything else. He left work and went to his parents home each day at lunch to prepare their mid-day meal when they were in advanced age. When his father passed, he took his mother to church every Sunday. He arranged for the purchase of the house next door for his mother so he could care for her and stay at night. This was a compassionate man. He didn't believe animals should be left in the cold or allowed to go hungry. He helped care for the many animals rescued by his wife and daughters. Never one to advocate violence, he once said "I never believed in firing at anything that couldn't shoot back." On this day I recall the memory of this marvelous human being that I was so blessed to have as my father. It is important to me that I share this information with others that they may know a person of such character once graced this world with his presence. Happy 100th Birthday Daddy. Your firstborn, Dawn on July 15, 2016.13
