John joined the Navy during his final year at Andrew Lewis High School. After serving on ships and traveling around the world, he spent tours at Andrews Air Force Base, MD; the Pentagon, working 10 years for the Secretary of the Navy, obtaining his college degree and being commissioned an officer. His last two tours were at the Naval Academy at Annapolis and at the Navy Nuclear Training facility in FL. He retired from the Navy after 28 years as a Lieutenant Commander. After retirement, he lived in Florida and later he and his wife, Joanne Schmidtgall-Oyler, moved to Illinois, near her family. In addition to his wife, Jo, John is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Bobbie Oyler, of Roanoke; his two sons, Joel Oyler of Maryland, and Brett Oyler, of Roanoke; grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and special aunt, Hazel Prease, of Roanoke. He also leaves behind his faithful dog, Haley. John worked at many part-time jobs during his retirement, including driving grain trucks for his brother-in-law in Illinois, as an Assistant Postmaster in Armington, Ill., preparing annual tax returns for HR Block and building birdhouses in his workshop. John's real passion was helping others in difficult situations-guiding others during his 30 years following his Navy career. He had a strong faith, attending several churches in Illinois and led a community fellowship of Christian men. John's funeral service will be in Hopedale, IL on Saturday, April 20, 2013. His Roanoke family suggests that memorials be given to the donor's own church or favorite charity. on April 14, 2013.2
