Harold Curtis McCurdy1
M, b. April 2, 1921, d. June 28, 2013
Harold Curtis McCurdy was born on April 2, 1921 at Lenoir City, Loudon Co., Tennessee.2,1 He married Martha Ann Wade, daughter of Michael Aaron Wade and Mary Elizabeth Conner, on November 10, 1943.3,4,1,5 Harold Curtis McCurdy died on June 28, 2013 at Oak Ridge, Anderson Co., Tennessee, at age 92.2,1 He McCurdy, Harold Curtis, age 92, of Oak Ridge, died peacefully at home Friday afternoon, June 28th, 2013. Born in Lenoir City, Tennessee in 1921, he attended Maryville College and the University of Tennessee, where he was Phi Kappa Phi and Tau Beta Pi, and president of Alpha Chi Sigma fraternity. After graduation, he married Martha Ann Wade, moved to Oak Ridge and worked at both Y-12 and ORNL. His various nuclear engineering management positions included early work on calutron technology (beta collectors) to isolate radioactive isotopes, small reactors (including one on the first nuclear-powered merchant ship, the USS Savannah), and the design and testing of components for future fusion devices. In 1958, he moved his family to Karns, remodeled a large country home while raising his children, and maintained his Oak Ridge connections through work and church. Retiring in 1987 after forty-four years, he moved back to Oak Ridge to enjoy life as an avid hiker and continuing education student. He was active in the 43 Club; and he loved learning and sharing philosophical and intellectual ideas with his friends, both in person and online; and enjoyed studying religious history and world cultural traditions as an active member of the adult Sunday School class of the United Church. Diagnosed in March 2013 with acute lymphoid leukemia, Harold lived with his illness the same way he had lived his life: with courage, a sense of humor, and optimism. Noble and graceful as his body failed him, he will be remembered as a loving husband and father, friend, colleague, mentor, uncle, and a wonderful man. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and Wilson McCurdy; sister Lureid Jenkins, and nephews Mitch and Larry Jenkins. He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-nine years, Martha McCurdy; daughters, Harriett McCurdy and Beth Carter; sons, Wade McCurdy, John McCurdy (Lisa), and David McCurdy (Noreen); nephews, Don and Philip Jenkins (Anita); cousins, John and Bobby Hagler; six grandchildren, Jeff Carter (Ariel), Jason Munson-Jackson (Julie), Colin McCurdy, Kristen McCurdy, Matthew and Ethan McCurdy; and five great grandchildren, Wren and Tatum Carter, and Ella, Ava and Lilah Munson-Jackson, and a world of nieces and nephews. Since he donated his body to science, a celebration of his life will be held at the United Church, Chapel on the Hill, 85 Kentucky Ave., Oak Ridge, TN on Saturday, July 13 at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Church of Oak Ridge, the University of Tennessee Engineering Department, or Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning. on July 5, 2013.1
