His church membership was held at Bethel Baptist Church in Salem, and was also a member of its Maranatha Sunday School class. He enjoyed sports, fishing, woodworking, and his garden. He was also a faithful bowler with the Lee-Hi Seniors Bowling League. Preceding him in death were his parents, W. Alvis and Edith DeHart; and his first wife, Marlene Ellis DeHart. His surviving family includes his wife of 36 years, Joyce C. DeHart, Salem; children and their spouses, Susan and Corkey Bowles, Salem, Rev. Duane and Mary Lou Dehart, Fredericksburg, and Robert and Peggy Underwood, Roanoke; grandchildren, Courtney Bowles, Christopher Bowles, Amber Phelps, Taylor DeHart, Claire DeHart, Kelsey Underwood and fiancé, Andy Sulser, and Wesley Underwood; great-grandson, Elijah Phelps-Bowles; brother, Leon DeHart and wife, Margie; sisters-in-law, Mildred Pruett, Margaret (Peggy) Gray, Marie Collins, Judy McDaniel and husband, Russell, and Gladys Beckner and husband, Gary; brothers-in-law, Melvin Collins and wife, Helen, and Lionel Ellis; and many extended family members, friends, and neighbors. The family extends special thanks to the staff at Richfield Rehab for all of their caring and support during this difficult time.
