She was the daughter of the late Ottomus and Bessie Sowder and was also preceded in death by her husband, Augustus Thrash Sowder and her brother, Nelson Cockes. She retired after 40 years as postmaster of Elberon Post Office and was a member of New Lebanon Christian Church, Union Hunt Club, Surry Hunt Club and Neighborhood Hunt Club. Mrs. Sowder is survived by her sons, Gene Sowder, and Wallace Sowder and his wife Barbara; grandchildren, Scott Sowder and wife Amy, William Sowder and wife Anita, and Jennifer Wathen; and great-grandchildren, John, William, Ericka, and Ruby Sowder. The family will receive friends at the Wakefield Chapel of R. W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home, 11414 General Mahone Hwy, Wakefield, Va., on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, from 2 to 4 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ray Rowland officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Surry. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to New Lebanon Christian Church, P. O. Box 45, Elberon, VA 23846. on December 9, 2012.2

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Gaynor Alderman Mason of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Wes (Melanie) Burnette of Roanoke; beloved grandson, Matthew Mason Burnette; sister, Golda M. Conner of Copper Hill. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Collins Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jim Dickerson officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park, Roanoke, Monday at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Collins Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, 1998 at Lynch Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Johnson and the Rev. J. Wesley Inge officiating. Thomas and wife, Andrea, Caron D. Rouse, Kristi L. Rouse, and Tyler W. Thomas. Services will be at Oakey's South Chapel, 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 13, 2004. Pastor Jim Reeves will officiate. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel from 7:30 till 9 p.m. Tuesday. on October 12, 2004.2

Sims, Jr. of Dillon, Colo; grandchildren, Traci and husband, Gregg Basham of Salem, Staci and husband, Dan Bowman, Dale and wife, Dawn Poff of Roanoke, Kevin Poff of Salem; great-grandchildren, Taylor Basham, Kaila Poff, Kourtney Poff, Lane Poff, Morgan Poff and Laken Poff. Graveside services will be held Thursday, June 10, at 10 a.m. at Sherwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Everett Kier officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Lotz Salem Chapel. on June 9, 1999.2
