Russell W. Thornton Russell W. Thornton, 91, of Springfield, died at 6:55 a.m. on Wednesday, August 25, 2021, at Memorial Medical Center. Russell was born on April 14, 1930, in Springfield, the son of Lynn and Margaret (Owens) Thornton. He married Elizabeth O’Neal on December 12, 1951, in Springfield. Russ proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force, the Illinois National Guard, and the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. He was a member of the Springfield Ski and Boat Club and Springfield Elks Lodge #158. Russ enjoyed camping, boating, and traveling. Most importantly, Russ loved spending time with his family and his dog, Missy. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Frances Schleyhahn; and brother, Lynn Thornton. His grandson, David Clark III, passed away shortly after Russ on August 25, 2021. Russell is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty”; daughter, Gail (Ron) Thornton Gustin; son, Tim Thornton; foster-daughter, Shari Hall, all of Springfield; grandchildren, Josh (Jackie) Turasky of Rochester and Sommer Thornton of Springfield; granddaughter-in-law, Lisa Grant of Springfield; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; brothers, Jim Thornton of Springfield, and Harry Thornton of Pawnee; and many nieces and nephews. Born in Giles County on December 3, 1922, she was a daughter of the late George Harvey and Ruby Hilton Neice. She was retired from Holiday Inn and was a member of Riverview Baptist Church in Ripplemead. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Martin; three brothers, Billy, Albert, and Buddy Neice; and three sisters, Carmen Elmore, Annie Sanders, and Mary Kast. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Roy G. Martin; three sons and daughters-in-law, Roy Lee and Ellen M. Martin of Pembroke, David Martin of North Carolina, and Todd and Robin Reed Martin of Newport; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Myers of Newport, and Alice and Bobby Huffman of Rich Creek; two sisters, Bonnie Eppely of Christiansburg and Lida Williams of Pearisburg; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home at 605 Snidow St. in Pembroke with Pastor Shahn Wilburn and Pastor Eddie Kendall officiating. Burial will follow in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Missionary Fund at Riverview Baptist Church, P.O. Box 206 Ripplemead, Va. 24150 on April 28, 2004.2

He was an honorary member of the South Carolina Sheriff's Association and a member of the Elks Lodge. He was an avid golfer and a member of The Santee Super Seniors Golf Club. Frances was a loving ,caring wife and mother. She loved music and dancing and had a wonderful sense of humor. She worked for many years at Sears and then Joli Maternity wear helping expectant mothers with their wardrobe. She was also a Red Cross volunteer for a period of time. They are survived by three children all of Charleston. Rosanne Burke (Wes), Bill McCartney (Tina), and Mary McCartney. Eight Grandchildren and Sixteen Great-Grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held Saturday May 18, 2019 at Seacoast Church 2049 Savannah Hwy Charleston SC 29407. The family will receive visitors from 11 a.m. to noon with a memorial service immediately following. Interment will be at Live Oak Memorial Gardens at 3093 Ashley River Rd. Charleston SC 29414 at 3:00 pm. on May 14, 2019.4
