Roscoe Bloom Swim1,2,3,4,5,6
M, b. April 30, 1927, d. May 26, 1957
Roscoe Bloom Swim was buried at Elmore Cemetery, Deerfield Lane, Mercer Co., West Virginia.3,4 His Social Security Number was 234-38-6147.4 He was born on April 30, 1927 at Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.1,2,3,4,5 He married Helen Naomi Richards, daughter of Roy Floyd Richards and Belle Zora Calfee, on September 19, 1947 at Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.1,5,6 Roscoe Bloom Swim died on May 26, 1957 at Little Island Creek, Mercer Co., West Virginia, at age 30; Died from a stab wound.3,4,6 He A car was burned, a man was killed and two person were jailed for questioning late Sunday and early yesterday as a Sunday fishing party ended in tragedy. Dead is Roscoe Swim, 30-year-old truck driver of Princeton, the father of two. Swim was also owner of the car that was destroyed. The desolate Island Creek Road, nine miles east of Princeton, near the Summers County line was scene of the stabbing. A bread knife found on the scene apparently pierced the heart of the victim. Held last night in Mercer County Jail, still without charge, were Christine Franklin, 27, and Jessie Eugene Hughes, 29. All three principals were Princeton residents. Sheriff Clyde White said both the man and the woman had signed statements, but neither admitted any implication in or knowledge of the crime. Officers continued to take statements last night from Island Creek residents. White pieced together the day's events as follows: Swim, Hughes and their woman companion left Princeton early Sunday on a fishing trip. Enroute they picked up a Negro, his wife and child, who spent most of the day with the Princeton trio. Sometime after nightfall a leak developed in the gasoline tank of Swim's early 1950 car. Unable to patch the leak, he set fire to the car, destroying it. events occuring between the fire and Swim's wounding were hazy last night. A bread knife, believed to be the death weapon, was found near where the body of Swim lay. It was sent to the state police laboratory for tests, and results are expected by tomorrow. The investigation continues. Swim was a son of the late Claude Swim and Mrs. Arthur Pritchard or Norfolk, Va. He made his home with hi grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Long, on Old Athens Road. Surviving in addition to the mother and grandparents are the widow, the former Helen Richards of Rock; and two children, Roscoe B. Jr., and Sheila Diane, both at home. Swim had worked several months in Ohio, retumtng to Princeton several weeks ago. He was employed here as truck driver. The body will be returned to the Long home this afternoon from Seaver Mortuary. Arrangements are incomplete. on May 28, 1957.6 He Jessie Eugene Hughes, 29, of Princeton, was charged with murder yesterday in the Sunday knife slaying of 23-year-old Roscoe Swim of Old Athens Road. Hughes waived to the grand jury and is a prisoner at the Mercer County Jail in Princeton, Sheriff Clyde White said. Christine Franklin, 27, of Princeton, who was taken into back to custody early Monday along with Hughes, was released from jail yesterday. No charge had ever been brought against her. Swim was stabbed fatally in a fight with Hughes. A bread-knife blade had pierced his heart. He was buried yesterday. Sheriff White said Hughes signed a statement of guilt yesterday morning, shortly before a lie detector arrived in Princeton from the state laboratory in Charleston. Hughes submitted to the test even though he had confessed. Hughes' statement reconstructed the events leading up to the stabbing, White said. Swim and Hughes had been drinking together during the afternoon and evening. At about 7 p.m. Swim punched a hole in the gasoline tank on his car when it hit a stone. He failed in eforts to plug the leak - and set fire to the car. About three hours later, after the party continued in the vicinity of the charred automobile, the two men became engulfed in an argument. The argument grew into a fight, during which, Hughes said he came into possession of a knife, he knew not how. The fight continued until Swim dropped to the ground. Hughes said he threw the knife away - and waited. Sheriff White said his men arrived on the scene about an hour later and took both Hughes and the woman into custody. The following morning, as the investigation continued, officers discovered a bread knife, believed to be the death weapon, on the ground near the scene of the fight. Swim's body was found in a roadside ditch, near the burned car. He had returned to Mercer County about a month ago from a job in Ohio. on May 30, 1957.7
