Born May, 15, 1918, in Athens, WV, she was the daughter of the late Augustus and Ollie Wiley Martin. She attended school in Mercer County and retired from General Instrument Corporation in Tazewell, VA. She enjoyed gardening, playing bingo, loved being with her family and was an active member of the Goodwyn's Chapel Church of Christ. Lakie was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her husband Jack Owen Powell (1951), a son, Jackson F. Powell (1974), daughters-in-law Helen Powell (2006) Anna Powell (2010), Brothers: Sam, Earl, Gus, Lon, Walter & Tony Martin; Sisters: Grace Baumgarner, Crete Jackson, Easter Carter, Pearl Nunn, Bernice Johnson and Liza Anderson and a special neice, Frances Meadows. She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Paul E. Powell and (Pearl Akers) and her daughter, Thressa Carper and husband Orville. Burial will follow in the Resthaven Memorial Park in Princeton. "Etta" Southern died on February 2, 1938 at Greene, Mercer Co., West Virginia, at age 70.2,4 She Mrs. Etta Southern, 70, was found dead in her home south of Gilchrist at 2:15 p.m., Wednesday. A coroner's jury, impaneled by Dr. V. A. McClanahan of Aledo found that death was due to a heart attack. The body was discovered in an upright position in a rocking chair by Clyde Blaine, her son-in-law, when he went to the home to deliver a load of coal which Mrs Southern had ordered at 10 a.m., the same day. Mrs. Southern was born Dec. 20, 1867 in Harrisburg. Va., and had been a resident of Mercer county since 1898. She married Mr. Southern Aug. 31, 1897. Her husband preceded her in death Sept. 29, 1927. Four children were born to this union, two of whom died in infancy. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Elmer Flatt of North Henderson and Mrs. Nina Blaine of Viola. She also leaves a daughter by her first marriage, Mrs. Sadie Baker of Viola, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Goldie Andrews of Red Wing, Minn. on February 3, 1938.4

Savoy on March 5, 1960 at Lake Charles, Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana.2,4 Jo John Thompson Jo John Thompson, 72, departed this life on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011 while vacationing in Roanoke, VA. Jo was born on Aug. 10, 1938 in Princeton, WV and grew up on Claytor Lake in Dublin, VA. He was a 1956 graduate of Dublin High School, and after serving in the Air Force, where he was stationed at Chennault, he was employed by the Olin Corporation in Lake Charles. He retired from Olin as a maintenance supervisor in 1994. Jo was deeply committed to his community and was involved in many service organizations. He was active in Calcasieu 4-H and FFA and mentored several livestock exhibitors. He volunteered many hours to the parish livestock shows, and was named Honorary Sale Chairman in 2007. He was involved in the LSU AgCenter Master Gardener program and served as co-chairman for their Garden Festival since 2004. Jo served as president of the Iowa Lion's Club, Iowa AARP, and Iowa Housing Authority. He served on the Board of Directors for the Calcasieu Council on Aging for 6 years. He volunteered at LeBleu Settlement Elementary, Iowa High School, and Bell City High School. He was a fan of McNeese and Iowa football and was a member of the Cowboy Club. Jo is preceded in death by his parents, Bennett and Phyllis Thompson and brother Bill Thompson. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elaine Savoy Thompson; his three children and their spouses, Teresa and Maurice Marceaux of LeBleu Settlement, Jodi and Dana Rushing of Denham Springs, and Bill and Paula Thompson of Iowa; six grandchildren, Bennett and Brant Marceaux, Sammie and Victor Rushing, and Annabelle and Mia Thompson and one great-grandson, Kale Reese Marceaux. Pallbearers will be Jo's grandsons, Bennett and Brant Marceaux and Victor Rushing, and Mike Fournet, Troy LeFleur, and Gerald Doucet. Honorary pallbearers are Craig Thompson, Larry Smith, and Kale Marceaux. Burial will be in Consolata Cemetery. in August, 2011.2 He died on August 7, 2011 at Montgomery Co., Virginia, at age 72.2,5

Hearn, 71, of the 700 block of Brisa Court, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, in Chesapeake. Mr. Hearn was born in Princeton, W.Va., and was the son of the late Eugene and Nell Gore Hearn. He retired as a master sergeant from the U.S. Army in 1974. Mr. Hearn was also a highly decorated veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam during his 26 years of service. Mr. Hearn also had retired from the Public Works Dept. of the city of Portsmouth, where he had been employed from 1974 to 1988. He was a member of the Great Bridge Church of God. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Moles Hearn of Chesapeake; his two daughters, Judy Phillips of Lawrenceville and Sharon H. Harrell of Chesapeake; his son, Joseph Edward "Joe" Hearn of Hampton; two half-brothers, Danny Hearn and Jerry Hearn, both of Birmingham, Ala; his half-sister, Patsy Ann Armstrong, also of Birmingham, Ala; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Burial with military honors will follow in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. on September 1, 1998.3

Phillips; three brothers and one sister. Survivors include her children, Joseph E. Hearn and wife Kathy of Hampton and Sharon L. Harrell and husband Earl of Portsmouth; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers; a sister and her best friend, Ada Moles. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 20, 2011 at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. Rev. Randy Wooden will officiate. Interment will follow in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk. The viewing will begin on Wednesday with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.1
