Bernie is survived by his sister, Ruth Tomanek of Lynchburg and Bertie Hill of Raleigh, N.C. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Opal Yates Sowder; two sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Dorothy Sowder, of Salem, Steve and Tracie Sowder, of Roanoke County; three grandsons, Logan, Alec and Evan; one granddaughter, Madison; one sister, Carrie Chocklate and her husband, Elmer, of Blue Ridge; one brother, Edward Sowder and his wife, Lois, of Roanoke County. The family wishes to thank caregivers Bernice Campbell, Veda Hines, Linda Hemlick, and Connie Mundy. Also special thanks to all the nice folks at Good Samaritan Hospice, they are truly God's Angels of Mercy. Funeral services conducted by Chaplain Marvin Barbre will be held Saturday, October 8 at 12 noon at Lotz Salem Chapel. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Good Samaritan Hospice at 3825 Electric Road, SW, Suite A, Roanoke, Va. 24018, or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements are being handled by Lotz Funeral Home, Salem. on October 7, 2005.1

She was co-owner of E.C. Chocklett Concrete and Pottery for over 40 years. Carrie served on the church board for several years. She was a lifetime member of First Church of The Brethren. She was born on March 17, 1930, to the late Theo A. and Ethel Sowder and was also preceded in death by her brother, William Sowder. She will be sadly missed by son and daughter-in-law, David and Ronda; daughter, Janice; son and daughter-in- law, Michael and Lisa; nine grandchildren, Angie, Brian, Nikki, Kalvin, Jaren, Jesse, Matt, Kyle, and Amanda; four great-grandchildren, Tyler, Hayley, Jalen, and Jordan; and brother, Edward Sowder. The family would like to thank First Church of the Brethren Pastor Dava Hensley and the Women's Fellowship for their visits and cards and to Tina Smith with her loving care of our mother. A Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, December 5, 2019, at Oakey's East Chapel with Pastor Dava Hensley officiating. Interment will follow in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. on December 3, 2019.3

In retirement, Opal enjoyed traveling and tending her beautiful flower gardens. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy, and she loved them all dearly. Opal was a sweet, kind, and compassionate mother, grandma, and friend. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched. The family wishes to extend special thanks to her close companion, friend and caregiver, Jenny Williams Lee. Opal's life was enriched by Jenny's care, friendship, and company in her last few years of life. The family will celebrate Opal's life with a gathering of friends and family on Friday, March 16, 2018 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lotz Funeral Home Salem. The Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at Lotz Chapel Salem. Friends and family will be received at Opal's house immediately following the service. on March 16, 2018.3

     Elmer Cornelia Chocklett was buried at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens, 7271 Cloverdale Road, Cloverdale, Botetourt Co., Virginia.1 He was born on August 2, 1929 at Roanoke Co., Virginia.1,2 He married Carrie Mae Sowder, daughter of Theo Asa "Dock" Sowder and Ethel May Wertz, on July 4, 1953 at Roanoke Co., Virginia.3,1,2 Elmer Cornelia Chocklett died on August 19, 2009 at Botetourt Co., Virginia, at age 80.1 He Elmer C. Chocklett, 80, of Botetourt County, Va., died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, August 19, 2009. He was the owner of E.C. Chocklett Concrete and Pottery for over 40 years and retired from the N & W Railroad. Elmer was born on August 2, 1929, to the late Henry and Restine Chocklett and was also preceded in death by his brother, Earl Chocklett. He will be sadly missed by his beloved wife of 56 years, Carrie; son and daughter-in-law, David and Ronda; daughter, Janice; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Lisa; nine grandchildren, Brian, Nikki, Angie, Jaren, Jesse, Amanda, Matt, Kyle, and Kalvin; three great-grandkids, Tyler, Hayley, and Jalen; brother, Cecil Chocklett; sister, Joyce Stinnett; and his beloved dog, Brownie. The family would like to thank the Good Samaritan Hospice and the Veterans Administration Hospital for the care given to Elmer. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2009, at Oakey's East Chapel with Pastor Dava Hensley officiating. Interment will follow in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens with Military Honors by the United States Army. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 21, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's East Chapel, 540-977-3909. on August 20, 2009.1

Edward Kenneth Sowder, 85, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away on Friday, April 15, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lois Ailene Creasy Sowder, and nephews and nieces, David Chocklett, Janice Heard, Michael Chocklett, Randall Sowder, and Steven Sowder. Edward was predeceased by his parents, Theo Asa Sowder and Ethel May Wertz; brother, William J. Sowder; and sister, Carrie Mae Chocklett. Edward retired from Rusco Window Company after 37 years of service and was a member of Oak Grove Church of the Brethren. Since retiring Edward traveled the United States with his wife, Lois, and their poodles, in their motor home. The family would like to offer a special thank-you to Carilion Hospice for their excellent care of Edward. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2022, in Sherwood Memorial Park with Pastor Tim Harvey officiating. on April 17, 2022.3
