Gil was born May 13, 1919 in Potlatch, Idaho to Frank and Martha (Hutton) Yates. At the age of seven his family moved to a farm nine miles north of Potlatch where he attended grade school at the Mountain Home School District in Latah County. He graduated from Potlatch High School in 1938 where he excelled in football and baseball, and then moved to Coeur d'Alene to begin his apprenticeship with the Cassidy Funeral Home. After completing his apprenticeship he was employed by a funeral home in Yakima, Washington, and it was during this time that he met his future wife, Eileen Schanzenbach, who was attending nursing school at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Gilbert attended the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, graduated in 1941, and returned to Coeur d'Alene where he again was associated with the Cassidy Funeral Home. Three months after the outbreak of Pearl Harbor, Gilbert enlisted in the Medical Corps with the U.S. Navy. He and Eileen were married on May 10, 1942 in Wapato, Washington. In December of 1942 he was transferred to overseas duty for two years. After returning from sea duty he served as an instructor at the Hospital Corps School in San Diego until his honorable discharge in 1945. He was a founding member of the Coeur d'Alene Public Golf Course and a founding member of the CHS Viking Booster Club. He served on the Fair Board and the School Board. Gil was a 60 year member of the Masonic Lodge and a 60 year member of the Lions Club where he served two terms as president and two terms as zone chairman. He was also a member of the V.F.W., the American Legion, the Elks Lodge, the Eagles Lodge, the Hayden Lake Country Club, and was named "Boss of the Year" in 1966. He was past president of the Idaho Funeral Service Association, and the Kootenai County Saddle Club as well as rodeo chairman and arena director for 30 years. Gil was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church, having served on every church committee during his 65 years of membership. He enjoyed horseback riding, snowmobiling, golf, and playing cards with his friends. His accomplishments as a leader in community, church, youth, school, athletic, and professional programs are far too numerous to list. She was born in Roanoke, Va. on February 20, 1920. She was the daughter of Waller Morris King and Nannie Kathleen Beckner King. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Layman V. Pring and her husband of 38 years, Richard P. (Buck) Via. She is survived by her children, Jerry W. Via, of Blacksburg, Kathy V. Amrhrein and her husband, Steve, of Roanoke. In addition survivors include two special grand children, Ivy Mays and husband, Eddie, and Cory Amrhrein; four special great grandchildren, were very dear to her, Patrick, Bryce, Kylie and Keelan. Frances was a lifelong resident of the Roanoke Valley with strong family ties to Botetourt and Floyd counties. She was very proud of being a graduate of Jefferson High School class of 1938. She was baptized as a young woman into Melrose United Methodist Church and upon her marriage she joined First Church of the Brethren. In that capacity, she served as Sunday school teacher, an active member of the Women's Fellowship, a member of church board, building committee and a deacon. She was honored to be elected as a Deaconess Emeritus in 2011. After the death of her husband, she felt the need to be active and to offer programing for the seniors in the church, so she founded the "Keenagers", which she said were recycled teenagers. She organized and sponsored many bus trips, a cruise, a trip to Hawaii. Regular luncheons were also and important fellowship for this group and through her charisma, the group grew to include many others from other church congregations. Mother took pride in being a lifelong house keeper and along with raising her family, she opened our home to her parents and cared for them until their deaths. She was active in Women's club, garden club, china painting, gardening, traveling and card playing. She loved music and played several instruments. An Easter card from one of her friends said "There is nobody else in the world quite like you." Truer words were never spoken. Mom had an adventurous nature, a keen wit, a generous spirit, a loving heart and a warm smile for everyone. Special thanks to the wonderful care givers from Generation Solutions, Shelia, Ementress, Marty, Summer, Priscilla and Sade. Special thanks to the wonderful staff of Good Samaritan Hospice. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 11, 2015 from Oakey's North Chapel with burial following in Fairview Cemetery. The Rev. Karen Cassell officiating from First Church of the Brethren will lead the service.
