Samuel Clark Elmore was buried at Green Hill Cemetery, Union, Monroe Co., West Virginia.7,2 He was born on January 3, 1880 at Monroe Co., West Virginia.2 He died on July 31, 1918 at Lynchburg, Virginia, at age 38.5,1 He A telegram from Lynchburg yesterday, July 31, to Mr. C. E. Lynch conveyed the sad news that Mr. Sam'l. Elmore, an engineer on the Southern Ry., had been killed. The message did not disclose the nature of the fatal accident. Mr. Elmore was the youngest son of the late D.C. Elmore and Mrs. Araminta Clark Elmore, and was born in Monroe Co. He was a bright-minded and warm-hearted man, popular wherever he was known. His age was about 38 years. Surviving him are his mother and two brothers, Messrs. Harry and Alton Elmore of Spencer, NC, and two sisters, Mrs. T.J. Riffe of Pence Spgs. and Mrs. Clarence Atkins of Richmond, VA. He was a nephew of Mrs. C.E. Lynch and Mr. Samuel Clark of this county. Mr. Elmore's remains will be brought back to Union and interred in Green Hill Cemetery this afternoon. on August 1, 1918.5 He HOW ENGINEER SAM'L. C. ELMORE MET DEATH The body of engineer Samuel Clark Elmore, whose death by accident on the Southern RY. near Lynchburg, VA, was announced in the last WATCHMAN, was brought to Union last Thurs. afternoon, accompanied by his mother, brothers and sisters and a delegation of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. Funeral services were conducted in the Episcopal Church by Rev. Dr. Paca Kennedy in the presence of a large congregation at 5 o'clock, after which the remains of the deceased were laid to repose in Green Hill Cemetery with the impressive burial rites of the B. of L.E. Mr. Elmore was driving a freight engine hauling 42 cars loaded chiefly with government material from Spencer, NC, where his home was, to Monroe, VA, the end of the division, 4 mi. north of Lynchburg, on the afternoon of July 30. Near Durmid, a short distance from Lynchburg, the track was being repaired. It was the duty of a flagman to warn approaching trains and stop them until the track was ready for use, but for some reason this was not done in time to stop Mr. Elmore's train. The unready track went down beneath the weight of the engine which fell over on its side and with it 18 cars were wrecked. Engineer Elmore was caught under his engine. This was at 1:30 PM. His legs were badly crushed and he was hurt internally. For 8 hrs. he lay there perfectly conscious and helped to direct the efforts of the workers to extricate him. Though suffering much pain at times, he remained calm and sent a message of cheer to his mother. To extricate him required very careful work, lest he be (line was damaged on microfilm here--czw) ...9:37 PM he was taken out and it was hoped he would live. But at the Lynchburg Hospital, whither he was conveyed, he collapsed and at 1:30 on Wednesday morning, July 31, his brave spirit took its flight. His death was due to internal injuries. In the accident Brakeman J.H. Hoskins of Spencer, NC, was crushed to death and Fireman Sam Tyree of Lynchburg was so badly scalded that he died a few hours afterward. An investigation is in progress. on August 8, 1918.1
