Samuel Lewis "Sam" Mallory Sr.1,2,3,4

M, b. May 18, 1921, d. July 20, 1999
His Social Security Number was 229-24-9351.5 Samuel Lewis "Sam" Mallory Sr. was buried at East Hill Cemetery, both sides of Rt. 11, Elliston, Montgomery Co., Virginia.2,6,3 He was born on May 18, 1921 at Giles Co., Virginia.5,1,6 He married Pearl Irene Poff, daughter of Everette Banyon Poff and Anna Byerle, on June 15, 1940 at Floyd Co., Virginia.1,7,8,9,10 Samuel Lewis "Sam" Mallory Sr. died on July 20, 1999 at Ashe Co., North Carolina, at age 78.5,4 He Authorities in North Carolina have found the body of Samuel Lewis Mallory, the 78-year-old Elliston man who had been missing a month. His pickup truck had plunged over a steep embankment near milepost 264 of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Ash County, N.C. Authorities believe the accident happened on June 22 or 23. Hidden from view, Mallory's brown Mazda truck escaped notice until it was spotted by National Guard helicopters searching for marijuana. Capt. Steve Houk of the Ash County Sheriff's Office said the truck was found Tuesday 400 feet down the embankment and that it could not have been seen from the road because of the terrain and vegetation. He said there were no marks on the road suggesting that Mallory had used his brakes. The body was identified by a pathologist in the state medical examiner's office. Mallory, who family members said may have been in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, had last been seen at Hale's Restaurant in Shawsville on June 21. His grandson, Tony Vest, visited his home later that day and discovered that Mallory had not returned from the restaurant. Vest said the family is not sure why he drove to North Carolina, but that his grandfather was known to suddenly take trips to explore places he had never been. "He did like to get out and ride around," he said. Mallory was born in Pembroke and lived most of his life in eastern Montgomery County. Mallory and his wife, Pearl, lived at Smith Mountain Lake for about 10 years after he retired from Eaton Corp. in Salem, then returned to Elliston when her health worsened. She died in 1992. Vest said his grandfather was a humble, giving man. "He'd do anything for anybody if he could." He said the family was relieved to finally know what happened. "Not knowing was the worst part." Now, he said, the family knows "he's in a better place." on July 22, 1999.4 He MALLORY, Samuel Lewis, Sr., 78, of Elliston, passed away. He was retired from Eaton Corporation, and was a deacon at Big Spring Baptist Church in Elliston. He was predeceased by his wife, Pearl Mallory, and two sons, Jimmy and Sammy. Surviving family include one son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Janice Mallory of Copper Hill; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Jerry Maxey of Elliston, and Judy and Roy Vest of Check; one sister, Mary ("Peggy") Jones of California; and a special cousin, Mary ("Dump") Jones of Pembroke; ten grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and several sisters and brothers-in-law, who touched his life. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 29, 1999 at 2 p.m. at Big Spring Baptist Church in Elliston with Rev. Kenneth Gray, and Rev. Steve Sholer officiating. Interment will follow at East Hill Cemetery in Elliston. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 28, from 5 until 9 p.m. at the John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home, Salem. The family would like to thank everyone for helping search for our loved one and all the prayers, visits, and kindness shown, may God bless you. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Big Spring Baptist Church or a charity of choice. on July 27, 1999.3
