He graduated from Andrew Lewis High School in 1958. Following high school, Gary attended what was then known as Virginia Polytechnic Institute, where he was a proud member of the Corp of Cadets. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1962 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Upon graduation from college, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. LTC Poff served as an officer in the Army for over 26 years. During his military career, he served two tours in Vietnam, two tours in Europe, in addition to many other assignments.He was a true hero in many ways. He is survived by his daughter, Yvonne P. Woodhams (Tom) of Slidell, Louisiana; son, Scott L. Poff of Savannah; four grandchildren, Katie, Alex, Maggie and Phillip; and a sister, Brenda P. Zippin (Richard) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel, from 6 until 7 p.m. followed by a Memorial Service in Fox & Weeks' Chapel at 7 p.m. conducted by the Rev. After 30 years of service as a Safeway employee, Frank went on to complete five years as an employee at Liberty Fabrics before retiring in 1992. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying the outdoors greatly.
