She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie (Jack) Fitzgerald and together they owned and operated Jack's IGA Foodliner in Buchanan until their retirement in 1989. She was a member of the Buchanan Presbyterian Church and will be missed by many friends in a town she loved. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Elva C. Martin and Noah E. Martin of Roanoke. She is survived by a daughter, Sharon Fitzgerald of Troutville, a daughter, son-in-law, and a granddaughter, Leslie F. and Dr. Robert Schmidt and Cassie Lynn Schmidt of Fort Worth, Texas; two brothers, Algie Martin of Pilot and Donald Martin of Troutville; and many other caring relatives. Interment will follow in Mill Creek Cemetery. on March 25, 2002.⁵

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Roberts Palmer; daughter, Elizabeth Leigh Palmer Hadaway and her husband, the Rev. Michael Hadaway, of Richmond; brother Ellis Wayne Palmer and his wife, Peggy, of Chamblissburg; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Cockerham and her husband, Ken, of Collinsville and Ginger Roberts Ballard and her husband, Richard, of Abingdon; and brothers-in-law, Scott Roberts and his wife, Cleta and Charles Roberts and his wife, Anna Ray, all of Rural Retreat. He attended Jamison Elementary and Stonewall Jackson Junior High and was graduated from Jefferson Senior High School in 1950. After serving in a United States Marine Corps rifle company in the Korean War, he earned a bachelor's degree from Roanoke College, a master's from VPI and a doctorate from the University of Virginia. A teacher at Highland Park Elementary School and Jefferson Senior High School, he served as president of the Roanoke City Schoolmasters Club. He was principal of Wakefield Combined School, Wakefield, Va., and Culpeper County High School, later serving as director of instruction for the Harrisonburg school system. From 1968 through 1996, he served at Wytheville Community College in various capacities from professor to dean of instruction and was honored with the title Professor Emeritus in 1997. In 1998, he was the graduation speaker at the request of students, faculty and administration. He also taught graduate school administration courses for U. Va. and VPI and was a past commander of Wytheville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2719. A life member of the Marine Corps League, the V.F.W. and the American Legion, he was a past president of the Wytheville Rotary Club, which honored him with a Paul Harris Fellowship. He served on the board of Wythe United Way and as an usher and member of the board of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Wytheville. Interment will follow in the West End Cemetery. on December 10, 2003.¹

He was a member of Stone Memorial Christian Church; the Collinsville Fire Department; the Ruritan Club; Martinsville and Roanoke Estate Planning Council. Surviving in addition to his parents are his widow, Mrs. Phyllis Vandegrift Palmer; one daughter, Kimberly Ann Palmer of the home; and two brothers, Walter Palmer, Wytheville, and Ellis Wayne Palmer, Vinton. on January 5, 1977.⁷

He was a long time member of the Masonic Lodge and the Odd Fellows. He was an honorary life member of the Chamblissburg Rescue Squad and one of the original members of the S & C Volunteer Fire Department. He retired from General Electric after 37 years of service and was the owner of the Big Boys Sports Shop of Chamblissburg. He was predeceased by a son, Barry L. Palmer and brothers, Walter and Donald Palmer. Surviving family includes his wife of 56 years, Peggy D. Born in Roberts Cove, Virginia, she wanted to be a surveyor but was prevented by the misogyny of the times and taught math instead, serving most of her career at Wytheville Community College. Widow of Dr. Walter W. Palmer, survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Michael Hadaway, brother and sister-in-law Scott and Cleta Roberts, sister-in-law Anna Ray Roberts, brother-in-law Richard Ballard, their families, and devoted friends including Terri and Tony Corvin. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 18, 1991 from the Beaverdam Baptist Church. The Rev. Dennis E. Moore and other speakers will officiate.
