He loved to bass fish and was a member of River Cities Bassmasters and a U.S. Navy veteran. In addition to his mother, he is also survived by his wife, Brenda Hampton Phelps; two sons Chris (Amy) Stewart of South Point and Paul Phelps of Ashland, Ky; two sisters, Yvonne (Charles) Green of Ashland and Shelia (Jeff) Barbour of Richmond, Ind; a brother, Nicholas Phelps of Wadsworth; and four grandchildren, Lily Stewart, Lexi Stewart, Matthew Phelps and Daniel Phelps. Funeral services will be at noon Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland by the Rev. Rob Hale. Entombment will follow at the Rose Hill Mausoleum. on October 17, 2011.²
