(Pete) Conner and Burton Okey Conner, both of Callands; one sister, Elizabeth Horton of North Carolina; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. on February 18, 1987.10

Meads Jr., who retired from the U.S. Marine Corps, died Oct. 20 in Foley. He was 83. Meads, a native of Montgomery, was a resident of Lillian. He spent 30 years in the Marine Corps and attained the rank of sergeant major. A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he also served three tours of duty during the Vietnam era. He received a number of medals and decorations, including the Purple Heart and the Silver Star. He was a life member of American Legion Post No. 26, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Marine Corps Drill Instructors. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Meads of Lillian; one daughter, Elizabeth Styron of Riverdale, Ga; two sons, Walter S. Meads III of Lillian and James Mark Meads of McDonough, Ga; two stepchildren, Richard Wilson of Anniston, Ala., and Elyse Mize of Sacramento, Calif; one brother, Buddy Meads of Mobile; four grandchildren; and three step grandchildren. Burial with full military honors will follow in Barrancas National Cemetery on October 29, 2009.2

     Robert Eugene "Bobby" Wirt was buried at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, 2880 North Franklin Street, Christiansburg, Montgomery Co., Virginia.5 He married Waltraud Magdalene Anneliese "Val" Huenken.2,5 Robert Eugene "Bobby" Wirt married Ingeborg Martha Johanna Unknown.5 Robert Eugene "Bobby" Wirt was born on July 29, 1931 at Montgomery Co., Virginia.6 He died on June 5, 2017 at Blacksburg, Virginia, at age 85.5 He Bobby Eugene (Bob) Wirt, 85, died peacefully on Monday evening, June 5, 2017, at The Crossings At Blacksburg and entered into his Eternal home in Heaven to a sweet and glorious reunion with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his Heavenly family and friends after a long illness of Alzheimer's Disease and Congestive Heart Failure. He was preceded in death by his parents William Eugene and Minnie Era (Eanes) Wirt; wife, Ingeborg Martha Johanna Wirt of Germany and America; wife, Waltraud Magdalene Annaliese Wirt of Germany and America; son, Ronald Lee Wirt; brother, Henry Edward Wirt; brother-in-law, Rev. Dr. George William Barnes; infant nephew, Derek Wayne Wirt (son of Don and Wanda Wirt). Left to cherish his memory: sister, Barbara Jean Barnes; brother, James Lloyd (Elizabeth) Wirt; brother, Donald Lee (Wanda) Wirt; brother, Allen Insley Wirt; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and close friend, Connie B. Dudding and her family. Upon graduation from Christiansburg High School in 1949, he joined the United States Air Force in 1950 and served our Country in the military for 22 1/2 years retiring in 1973 earning the rank of SMSGT. He was stationed at Headquarters, United States Air Force, Europe, located at Lindsey Air Station, Wiesbaden, Germany, and United States Air Force Ramstein Air Base, Germany, while also being deployed to Italy and Vietnam. He was awarded The Bronze Star Medal in Vietnam by Brigadier General Bryce Poe for meritorious service while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in military operations against an opposing armed force in Vietnam from July 8, 1969, to July 8, 1970. Prior to his departure from Vietnam, he was also awarded the Vietnamese Air Force Medal for his advice and assistance to them during the same period. He received many other awards and commendations during his military career for his dedication in his service to our Country. Early in his military career, he served one tour of duty in the U.S. Air Force Recruiting Station in Roanoke, Va. He was a very friendly, giving, loving, kind, and generous person. He was a life long member of Cambria Baptist Church. After retiring from the USAF, he moved back to Christiansburg and worked as custodian at the Church for many years. He loved his Lord, his Church, his job, and the many friendships he made there over the years. Words cannot express our family's thanks and appreciation to the staff at The Crossings At Blacksburg and to Medi Home Health and Hospice staff and volunteers for their excellent tender loving care, kindness, and compassion shown to Bob while a patient in the Harmony Square Memory Care section at The Crossings. Heartfelt thanks also to Medi Home Health and Hospice staff for their Veteran Pinning Ceremony party for Bob at The Crossings on May 3, 2017, with family and friends attending and U.S. Navy Officers Kelly J.S. Gilbert and Dan J. Angle who presented him with a lapel flag pin and certificate to honor and acknowledge his years of military service and sacrifices. Special Thanks to Dr. Scott R. Boerth MD and his staff, and Dr. Daniel A. Osimani MD and his staff for their excellent care of Bob over the years. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. Many, many thanks to the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base Honor Guard, Goldsboro, NC for performing the military graveside rites to honor Bob's military service to the United States of America. on June 8, 2017.5

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 45 years, Elizabeth D. Wirt; sister, Barbara Jean Barnes; two brothers, Donald (Wanda) Wirt and Allen Wirt; children, Steve (Rebecca) Wirt, Pamela (David) Osborne, Scott (Julia) Wirt and Erica D. Amos; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. He loved life, woodworking, nature, hunting, antiques and collecting. He served his country in the United States Air Force in Guam. The family wants to thank everyone who cared for and helped our Dad, also known as Lloyd and Jim. A Graveside Service will be held at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens on Cloverdale Road. on October 29, 2017.5

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Eugene and Minnie Era (Eanes) Wirt; and his brothers, Bobby Eugene, James Lloyd and Edward Henry Wirt. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Michael Eric Wirt (Susan); daughter and son-in-law, Kristin Wirt Gunter (Jon); grandchildren, Megan and Ben Wirt, and Josh and Jakob Gunter; sister, Barbara Jean Barnes; brother and sister-in-law, Donald Lee Wirt (Wanda); beloved dog, Hershey; and many other relatives and special friends. Allen graduated from Christiansburg High School in 1966. Upon graduation he enlisted in the Air Force and served during the Vietnam War. He was stationed at Pope AFB in Fayetteville, N.C. as a U.S. Air Force Sgt., and worked as a Jet Engine Mechanic. Allen later worked for UPS and Wolverine. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening, watching the Dallas Cowboys, woodworking, and spending time with his family and friends. His friendly, giving, loving, kind and generous personality will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Interment with full military honors will follow in the Southwest Virginia Veteran's Cemetery in Dublin. The family would like to thank the staff at Kindred Hospice and Commonwealth Assisted Living for the care, kindness and compassion shown to Allen. on November 14, 2021.4
