Mr. Bender was an engineer and assistant production manager with Goodman Mfg. Co., Chicago, a heavy machinery manufacturer, until 1947, when he returned to Bluffton to associate as partner in the L. L. Bender & Company. In 1953 he entered the health care field with Wells County Hospital (later Wells Community Hospital) serving as its Administrator. He retired in 1987 after 34 years of service. Mr. Bender also served in many roles in Bluffton including City Plan Commission, Mental Health Association, United Way, Anthony Wayne Council for Boy Scouts, Elm Grove Cemetery Association, Allen-Wells Chapter Red Cross Board, Regional Blood Services, Wells County Historical Society, Bluffton Lions Club, Elks Lodge and the Wabash River Heritage Corridor Commission. Professional Organizations include American Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers, American Academy of Medical Administrators, Indiana Hospital Association, former director Midwest Health Network. He was also been awarded Outstanding Citizen Award in 1995, Melvin Jones Award for the Lions Club, and in 1987 he was named Sagamore of the Wabash along with the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts, and recipient of the Clara Barton Award. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as trustee and Chairman of the Administrative Board. Surviving relatives include a son, Paul Lee (Connie) Bender, Jr. of West Lafayette; one daughter, Linda M. (husband Carl) Heuer of Las Vegas, Nev; and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a sister, Georgiana Bender. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church in Bluffton with Pastor Larry Johnson and Rev. Cindy Osgood officiating. Calling hours will take place from 9 to 11 a.m., Thursday (prior to the services) also at the church. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or the Anthony Wayne Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Thoma/ Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home in Bluffton. on September 14, 2010.3

She had been ill some time but bedfast only since Saturday, having been taken to the hospital Sunday. Born in Tipton county August 13, 1893, the daughter of Charles H. and Sarah Smith Foster, she was married to Joseph Vern Davenport, November 4, 1911. The family first lived on a farm, coming to Kokomo 16 years ago. Soon after moving to Kokomo, Mr. and Mrs. Davenport united with Beamer Methodist church. At the time of her death, Mrs. Davenport was president of the W.S.C.S. of the church and had taught Sunday school class of boys a number of years. Surviving with the husband are two daughters, Mrs. Gwendolyn Small, 2014 North Jay street, and Mrs. Helen Kratzer, Kokomo route 5, and a sister, Mrs. Irene Small, 1111 South Buckeye street. The body is at the Long funeral home and will be taken to the residence at 10 o'clock Tuesday mornng. The funeral will be held at Beamer Methodist church at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon with he Rev. W. J. Briggs officiating. Burial will be in a Kokomo cemetery. on August 29, 1949.4 She died on August 29, 1949 at Kokomo, Howard Co., Indiana, at age 56.6,3,4

     Ora G. Small was buried at Crown Point Cemetery, 1101 East Sycamore St., Kokomo, Howard Co., Indiana.4,6 He was born on May 22, 1885 at Elkin, Hamilton Co., Indiana; His death certificate has a birth year of 1884.1,7,5,8,9 He married Irene Cynthia Foster, daughter of Charles Hartman Foster and Sarah A. Smith, on April 20, 1907 at Indiana.10,5,9 Ora G. Small Relatives in this county received word early Thursday of the death of Ora Small, 52, which occurred at the Robert Long hospital in Indianapolis early Thursday morning. Death was caused by paralysis he having been stricken at his home in Kokomo where he was taken about two weeks ago following the attack. The deceased is thought to have suffered another attack at the hospital which hastened the end. The body was taken from the hospital by an undertaker from Kokomo and will lie in state at the home at 911 North Main street in that city until the hour for services, which have not been fully arranged. The death of Ora Small is the third in his immediate family in two months. His father John A. Small died at Elkin January 20 and his brother Clennie A. (Ote) Small ten days later. Ora Small was a son of John A. and Hannah C. (Endicott) Small, pioneers of Elkin and East Union communities, born May 22, 1885. His birth occurred near Elkin and he lived most of his life in that community being educated in the schools of that section. April 20, 1907 he was united in marriage to Miss Irene Foster and the widow and eleven children survive, Dallas and Asenitha both of Kokomo, where the latter is a teacher in the Kokomo schools; Jean, a graduate nurse at Muncie and Glendon, John, Robert, Virginia, Lois May, Beverly, Treva and Harriett all at home. He is also survived by four sisters, Mrs. Stella Ogle and Mrs. Agnes Miller of Sheridan and Ella Fear of Ekin and Miss Della Small of Bridgeport. For a number of years Ora Small resided on a farm near Peetsville on the Range Line road, removing to Kokomo a number of years ago where he had been engaged in various kinds of work. Prior to removing to that city he was badly injured in a fall from the roof of a building on which he was working at his trade as carpenter. The deceased leaves a large number of relatives and friends in this county to mourn his passing. on March 24, 1938.5 He died on March 24, 1938 at Indianapolis, Marion Co., Indiana, at age 52.5,8

     Helen Louise Davenport Helen Louise Kratzer Brown, 90, of Bickford Cottage, Wabash, Indiana died at 10:23pm Friday, May 21, 2010 at Wabash Skilled Care Center. She was born November 6, 1919 in Tipton, Indiana to Joseph Vern and Bessie L. Foster Davenport. Helen married John P. Kratzer in Kokomo, Indiana on February 4, 1939; he died April 12, 1983. She then married Robert Brown in Roann, Indiana on November 6, 1983; he died in 2004. She worked at Wabash Magnetics, retiring after 30 years. Helen was a member of the Roann Christian Church since 1951. She also was a member of the Converse Order of the Eastern Star, a longtime member of the Roann Order of the Eastern Star, and a former member of the Roann Matrons Club. Helen and her husband John moved to Roann in 1950 from Kokomo, and lived there until 1983, when she moved to Amboy with her second husband Robert. She is survived by three daughters, Sara Van Buskirk of Wabash, Judy (Gary) Cole of Denver, Indiana, and Nancy (Larry) Campbell of Wabash; nine grandchildren, David (Rhonda) Van Buskirk of Roann, Thomas (Chris) Van Buskirk of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Peter (Robin) Van Buskirk of Las Vegas, Nevada, Carrie (Beave) Fuller of Denver, Greg (Ann) Livengood of Akron, Indiana, Jody (Kenny) Worden of Macy, Indiana, Lisa (Mike) Dever of Windfall, Indiana, Elizabeth (Mike) Sanders of Converse, Indiana, and Chris (Debbie) Campbell of Kokomo, Indiana; twenty great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; four step-sons, Bobby (Mary Beth) Brown of Amboy, Indiana, Xen (Susie) Prickett of Peru, Indiana, Keith (Kay) Prickett of Marion, Indiana, Steve (Lynn) Brown of Peru; several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Betty Fowler and Carolyn Kratzer, both of Cassville, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law, Gwendolyn and Jim Small, her great grandson, Jordan L. Fuller, her son-in-law, Peter Van Buskirk, and sister-in-law Mary Thompson. Funeral services will be held at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Ave. Wabash on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 2:00pm with Rev. Robert Kirtlan officiating.
