Katherine is survived by her daughter and caregiver, Helen D. Hodge; son, Bobby J. Hodge; brother, Emory (Sylvia) Tarpley; uncles; aunts; nephews; nieces; grandchildren. Sylvia Diane Thomas died on December 17, 2021 at Virginia at age 82.3 She Sylvia Diane Thomas Tarpley, of Salem, Va., was born to Ralph G. "Happy" Thomas and Grace Thomas Overfelt on January 23, 1939 in Roanoke, Va. She passed away on Friday, December 17, 2021. Sylvia spent the first 10 years of her life in Catawba, Va. and then called Salem her home for the rest of her life. Sylvia was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Ralph G. Thomas Jr; and her son, Emory Ned Tarpley Jr. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Emory Ned Tarpley Sr; her daughters, Brenda Dyer (Kenny), Sharon Tarpley-Looney; daughter-in-law, Trisha Tarpley; five grandchildren, Kelsey and Phillip (Jaime) Tarpley, Jamie Dyer (Andrew Malloy), Emily and Sara Looney; and two great-grandsons, Liam and Reese; other special cousins; nephews; and many friends. Sylvia and Emory were charter members of Calvary United Methodist Church in Salem. She was a partner with her husband in his ministry, starting Sunday School Classes, teaching Bible studies, leading ladies Spiritual Retreats and assisting him in many other ways. Sylvia helped to start the first Day Camp at Camp Alta Mons and she was a Brownie Scout leader. She loved each of the churches they served, loved her family and friends. Above all she loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Also, she and Emory loved their trips to the ocean and to the mountains, the warm pool at the Salem YMCA and meeting friends for breakfast or lunch. She loved to do genealogy, scrapbooks, memory books and to do crossword and word search puzzles. Sylvia's family would like to express a heartfelt thanks and appreciation to each of the staff and workers at South Roanoke Nursing Home. A special thanks to RN Diane who gave special attention and care to Sylvia during her last days. on December 21, 2021.3

He was born on February 1, 1960 to his loving parents, Sylvia and Emory Ned Tarpley Sr. in Salem, Virginia. He is survived by his parents; his sisters, Brenda Tarpley Dyer (Kenny Dyer) and Sharon Tarpley-Looney; his high school sweetheart and wife of 36 years Patricia Cronk Tarpley; his daughter, Kelsey Tarpley and son, Phillip Tarpley (fiancé Jaime Lane); his father-in-law, Sherrill Cronk (Gloria Anderson); his brother-in-law, Mark Cronk (Alison Cronk); his sister-in-law, Linda Cronk Miller (Esson Miller); and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Betty "Nana" Cronk. Ned was a man of few words but those few words grabbed the attention of anyone in the room. He was a 1979 graduate from Salem High School, formerly Andrew Lewis High School, where he played football and scored the first touchdown in Salem High School history and the last touchdown in Andrew Lewis history. He was a dedicated father, husband, coach, scout leader, friend and mentor to many. Ned served as the Mason's Cove Recreational Club President for multiple years while coaching teams at the same time. He went out of his way to ensure every player was included and had equal opportunities on every team he coached. Ned continued his servanthood as his children grew older and volunteered to drive the equipment trailer for the Glenvar High School football team, help with pregame meals, and do anything that was necessary. He was the recipient of an Award of Appreciation for his Dedication and Commitment to the football program in 2010. Ned took pride in his job, working for Advance Autoparts for 25+ years. He was a dependable, consistent employee who left a lasting impression on those who worked around him. Ned was a lot things, but most of all, he was a rock. He was a stable, steady presence that was obvious to anybody who met him and cherished by those who loved him. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and began his fight promptly. While fighting, Ned didn't miss work even while receiving chemo and radiation treatments, unless it was for a family vacation to Emerald Isle, N.C. or Hatteras, N.C. Ned will defeat his cancer in the end by electing to have his physical body cremated. on December 18, 2020.7

He was active in the Youth and Adult Soccer Leagues of Roanoke Valley. He was co-president of the Greater Southwest Soccer Association. Mr. Carr was Secretary of the Contractor's Bowling League where he has served since 1979. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Gaynell Angle Carr; two sons, Andrew Sherman Carr, Timothy Wray Carr; mother, Mrs. Lois Carr; sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and John P. Krista, all of Roanoke; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Forrest and Georgie Angle, Rocky Mount; brother and sister-in-law, Garry and Cindy Angle, Shawsville; three nephews, Michael Krista, Patrick and Jonathan Angle; niece, Cynthia Krista. Interment will be in Franklin Memorial Park. on April 22, 1987.6
