William Smith1,2,3

M, b. December 5, 1826, d. August 4, 1903
William Smith was buried at Sharpsville Cemetery, Sharpsville, Tipton Co., Indiana.3 He William Smith - Numbered among the successful farmers and pioneers of Tipton county is this worthy citizen of Liberty Twp. He is a native of Virginia, born Dec. 5, 1826, a son of Samuel and Lucy Smith, both likewise born in the Old Diminon, and of German descent. In 1834 they moved with their family to Madison county, Indiana, where they leased land. Later they went to Hancock county, Indiana, and entered and improved a good homestead. Samuel Smith was a prominent member of the Methodist church and was a class-leader. Honorable and upright in all his dealings, he set a worthy example to his large family and lived to see them all respected citizens of the several communities in which they located. The youngest died in infancy and the others are named as follows: Indiana, James, John, William, Elizabeth, Hutchinson, Margaret, Catherine, Lucy A., and Harper. Catherine (Mrs. Vanmeter) and William are the only ones of the number now residents of Tipton County. William Smith has always led an agricultural life. He did not have very good educational advantages, but made the best of his limited opportunites. He remained under the parental roof until he grew to manhoood and married, and continued there for two years subsequently to his marriage. He then went to Illinois, but soon returned, liking this state better, and in 1852 he bought 160 acres of heavily timbered land in Tipton Co. This property he was not able to entirely pay for, but ere very many years had passed he was not only free from debt, but had a good bank account. Having built a cabin he proceeded industriously with the great task before him - that of clearing and putting under cultivation his homestead. At present he owns 400 acres of land, all but 60 acres of which are cleared, ditched and tiled, and each year his farm yields abundant harvests. Some years ago Mr. Smith gave his cabin to his son, and erected a commodious house, which, with good barns and other buildings, gives the farm a prosperous and thrifty appearance. In the early days of his residence here wild game was plentiful and neighbors scarce, and among other privations and hardships which he endured was that of taking his grain long distances to get it ground - no small matter, as roads had not been made to any extent. After he had partially cleared his land, Mr. Smith removed to a farm which he had purchased in the vicinity of Sharpsville, and conducted the place, at the same time operating a gristmill, which he owned for 15years or more. Then he traded and disposed some of his property and returned to his old home place, where he expects to pass the remainder of his life. Formerly he bought and shipped cattle and livestock to the city markets and otherwise took an active part in various business enterprises. He has been a true and faithful citizen, doing his duty at all times and seeking to promote the welfare of his neighbors and the community in general. He has never aspired to public office, but has given his ballot to the nominees of the Republican party. He and his family have been identified with the Methodist Episcopal church for years and at one time he was a steward in the congregation. The first wife of Mr. Smith was a Miss Mary Stevens, a native of Rush county, Indiana. She was one of the 5 children of William and Hannah (Hill) Stevens, farmers. The others are Lewis, who lives in Howard Co; Solomon and Sally of this county; and Nancy, who is deceased. The children born to our subject and his first wife were 8 in number, and only 3 survive: Mrs. Sarah Foster; Samuel G., a farmer; and William, who is managing the old homestead. The children who died while young were named Kisar, Henry J., John L., Rachel S., and Lucy H. The wife and mother was summoned to the silent land in 1877. Two years later, Mr. Smith married Mrs. Cynthia Smith, a widow and daughter of Joseph Townsend, and they have had 2 daughters. Mary A., the elder, is Mrs. William Woolridge; and the younger, Leona, is still at home. Joseph Townsend, whose sketch is printed elsewhere in the volume, is a representative citizen of this county, and is a descendant of the famous Indian princess Pocahontas, whose bravery saved the life of Captain Smith, according to the old tradition in early Virginian colonial history.1 He was born on December 5, 1826 at Virginia.1,3 He married Mary Stephens, daughter of William Stephens and Hannah Hill, on March 21, 1850 at Rush Co., Indiana.1,2 William Smith married Cynthia Townsend in 1879.1 William Smith died on August 4, 1903 at age 76.3

Samuel Jasper Smith was buried at Goar Cemetery, Jackson, Tipton Co., Indiana.9,8 He was born on September 22, 1865 at Tipton Co., Indiana.10,7,8 He married Cora Curry on October 6, 1887 at Tipton Co., Indiana.3,11,7 Samuel Jasper Smith died on December 2, 1930 at Liberty Township, Tipton Co., Indiana, at age 65.11,7,8 He Samuel J. Smith, 65 years of age, one of the best known farmers and stockman of the county, died at his home on Liberty-Cicero township line, one half mile east of Range Line road, at 8:15 Tuesday night. Pneumonia from which he had suffered for one week caused death, his condition for the past few days having been critical. Erysipelas complications also developed during his illness and were contributory to the death of this well known man who was known prominently not only in his immediate vicinity but throughout the state as a breeder of fine stock. His farm of 269 acres is one of the best in the county and his residence one of the best country homes in this section. The latter was damaged by fire recently. Samuel J. Smith was born in the community in which his death occurred in 1865, his parents being William and Mary (Stephenson) Smith, who settled west of Jackson in 1852. The mother died in 1877, leaving the deceased and two other children, Sarah and William Jr. The father remarried in 1878 and two children Mary B. and Leona E. were born to the second union. Samuel J. Smith was united in marriage to Miss Cora Curry, daughter of William and Lucinda Curry, early settlers of this county and the widow and three children survive. Mrs. Smith is a sister of Mrs. Nathan B. Smith and Charles Curry of Tipton and of Jonathan Curry and William Curry former residents who now reside in the south part of the state. The surviving children are Nollie and Paul Smith at home and Theral Smith of Traverse City. Mich. The latter reached the parental home Tuesday night having driven through from Michigan. One brother William and a sister Mrs. Ed Dawson reside in the immediate vicinity of his home. Mr. Smith was for many years a member of the Hopewell Methodist church and a man whose standing in the community was high, he having the confidence and respect of all.
