Mrs. Lowder-Bailey was a public schoolteacher, tennis and basketball coach, and an inspiring associate professor of English at Morris Harvey/University of Charleston. Born in Bluefield to George R. Lowder and Virginia C. Hearn Lowder, Mrs. Lowder-Bailey moved to Charleston in 1938 with her family. With the exception of her time away at universities for her education, Charleston has been her home ever since. She was educated at Bethany College, West Virginia University, Auburn University, and Morehead State University. She taught at Upper Witcher Grade School 1951-52; Woodrow Wilson Jr. High School 1952-59; and Charleston High School 1959-64. An associate professor of English at Morris Harvey College/University of Charleston from 1965-1994, she was voted Teacher of the Year for 1987-88. Thousands of Charleston residents will no doubt fondly remember the time they spent with her in classrooms and on athletic courts. Many of the English teachers in Kanawha County learned their grammar and how to teach grammar under her instruction. She was married to Dr. Frederick E. Bailey Jr., who predeceased her in 1991. A nationally respected senior chemical research scientist with Union Carbide/Dow, Dr. Bailey received acclaim for more than 60 U.S. patents for formulas he developed, among many other achievements. Mrs. Lowder-Bailey was the last survivor among her siblings: sister, Francis Lowder Morrison; and brothers, Daniel Lowder and Joseph Lowder. She is survived by her nephews, Kevin Lowder of St. Louis, Mo., and Craig Lowder of Mahopac, N.Y; brother-in-law, John W. Morrison III of Tazewell, Va; and many dear lifelong friends. She was an active member of the community, serving many organizations: the Municipal Beautification Commission, the Greater Kanawha Valley Scholarship Committee, Patchwork, Tennis, Inc., and the First Presbyterian Church. She generously supported many local and national charities, most notably, Kanawha Hospice Care, Inc. A memorial service will be held in her honor at the First Presbyterian Church, 16 Leon Sullivan Way, in Charleston on June 29, 2010, at 10 a.m. Her ashes will be interred in the columbarium at St. Matthews Episcopal Church on Norwood Road. on June 13, 2010.4

Born Oct. 22, 1925 in Tazewell, Va., he was the son of the late Alex Akers and Sarah Hylton Akers. Mr. Akers had been a resident of the Princeton area all of his life. He was retired from the Mercer County Board of Education having served for several years as custodian at Princeton Senior High School. Working on tractors was the love of his life. Mr. Akers was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Reece, Joe and Jim and one sister, Carrie. She was born February 5, 1931, the youngest of six children born to Albert R. Belcher and Carmen Spence Belcher. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Her brothers, Charles, Richard, Jack and Albert Jr. and her infant sister, Mable all preceded her. She was fifteen years old at the end of World War II when she married the love of her life, Joseph I. Hodges. They were blessed with sixty-five years of marriage, and gave life to four children, Barbara and husband Larry King of Sandlick, Brenda and husband Kenneth Johnston of Princeton, and Joseph E. Hodges and wife Betty of Princeton; their infant son, Eldon Ray preceded her to heaven. She cherished her nine grandchildren, Kristie and Chip Musick, Tracie and Anthony Parker, Kelly and Scottie Gordon, Immanuel and Buffy King, Kimberly and Jonathan Hendricks, Lisa and Randall Black, Brittany Hodges, Nancy Hodges and David Hodges; and adored her loving 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. A quiet, humble person, she was an amazing woman who modeled the Proverbs 31: Lady, caring for her home, her family and her husband and their family. She cared for her Joe with compassion and love through many years of illness and sacrifice. She was quick to laugh and loved to sing and read. Her family has rich stores of beautiful memories to ease their great loss. She will be missed more than words can tell. Services to celebrate the life of Minnie Hodges will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 15, 2011 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Randall Black and Pastor Casper Dalton officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons. on August 13, 2011.3
