Smith of Danville, passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 19, at Autumn Leaves Memory Care Center in Bolingbrook at the age of 101. Harlan was born in Bismarck to Clarence and Alice Smith. He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific as Chief Petty Officer on the USS Birmingham. Returning from the War in 1946 he married his sweetheart, Alice Louise ("Sally") Redman. He, and eventually his wife, joined his father in the insurance business and brought the business to Danville as C.H. Smith Insurance. "Smitty" served many in the area as their "insurance man" for five decades. He is survived by his daughter Gail (Joe) Girard of Minooka; grandchildren, David (Sarah) McHone-Chase of DeKalb and Lisa (David) Tollefson of Tacoma, Washington; five great-grandchildren, who along with his grandchildren was their "PawPaw." He is also survived by his brother, Wendell (Ellyn) Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Bernice, Ruth and Ruby. His partner in life, his wife Sally, preceded him in death in 2012. Harlan was involved in the Danville community as a longtime member of Central Christian Church. Serving as elder for the church, he was a Sunday School teacher and enjoyed sharing where he shared his faith, wit and love with many. The church's CoWed class was a source of lifelong friends as well as a community of faith. He also was a member of the Kiwanis Noon Club, serving in many capacities. Danville Library Board, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, The Greater Danville Association of Churches and many other civic organizations also benefited from his talents and leadership. He prided himself on being a lifelong learner taking classes at Danville Area Community College after his retirement in his mid-80s. on February 21, 2018.5

Ruby Ellen Smith Ruby Ellen Brummet, 90, of Lewistown, and formerly of Danville, died at 2:20 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at Prairieview Care Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 26, at Pape Funeral Home, 10 E. Williams, Danville, with Pastor Ron Ziemer officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior. Burial will be at Rose Cemetery in Bismarck. Ruby was born on Feb. 2, 1919, in Bismarck to Clarence and Alice (Kaneen) Smith. She attended Bismarck Grade and High School, graduating in 1936. She then attended Illinois State University and graduated in 1940. Ruby worked for the school district in Farmer City until she married Berthal Dayne Brummet on Feb. 8, 1941; he preceded her in death on Nov. 15, 2000. The couple retired to Pinehurst, N.C. On moving back to the Danville area from Pinehurst, N.C., several years ago, she spent most of her time in nursing homes. She was a member of DAR and the Pinehurst Village Chapel Church and attended the Central Christian Church while in Danville. Ruby Ellen Brummet was a victim of two tragedies: First, their son, “Randy” died from a result of a school prank, when a chair was pulled away causing him to fall and severely striking his head. Second, Her husband, Berthal, contracted Aids from bad blood furnished by the Red Cross at the Pinehurst hospital after a heart operation, causing him to die several years later. Survivors include a sister, Ruth Harbert of Manassas, Va; two brothers, Harlan (Sally) Smith of Danville and Wendell (Ellyn) Smith of Bismarck and Daisy Arruza, whom she thought of as a daughter. She was preceded by her parents, her husband, and a son: Randall Dayne Brummet and a sister, Bernice Cox.3 She was buried at Rose Cemetery, Bismarck, Vermilion Co., Illinois.3,5 She was born on February 2, 1919 at Bismarck, Vermilion Co., Illinois.3 As of February 8, 1941,her married name was Brummet.3 She married Berthal Dayne Brummet on February 8, 1941.3 Ruby Ellen Smith died on June 24, 2009 at Lewiston, Fulton Co., Illinois, at age 90.3

He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Ellyn, and three children, Richard W. Smith of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass., Craig M. Smith of Austin, Texas, and Dr. Colleen K. Grogan of Cincinnati, Ohio. He also leaves six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Smith grew up as a farm boy, attended Bismarck schools and then earned his wings as an Army Air Force fighter pilot in WWII. After graduating from the University of Illinois with a degree in Civil Engineering, he worked on municipal utility projects. During the Korean conflict, the Air Force, in need of pilots, recalled him to active duty involuntarily. After extensive graduate engineering schooling, he served as an engineer in development and testing of many Air Force aircraft programs, including a four-year assignment at the Pentagon. For two years he was called on to pilot C-130 aircraft through typhoons from a base in Guam to collect critically needed weather data for both civilian and military purposes. Shortly after this, he served a tour in Vietnam. He retired from the Air Force in 1973 and returned to his family farm for the remainder of his life. Wendell was active in his church as well as county and township government. He and his family, with six grandchildren, enjoyed many, many good times on the farm raising cattle, planting trees and enjoying one another. Burial will be in Danville National Cemetery. on July 23, 2018.3

Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011 at her home. Arlene was born on Dec. 7, 1923, in Spencer, Iowa, the daughter of Clyde Earl and Mildred Dora (Rhodes) Smith. She married Eugene " Gene" A. Rice on Sept. 17, 1943, in Danville. He preceded her in death on Aug. 25, 2001. She later married Marvin Morgan in 2003 in Indiana. He preceded her in death in 2006. She is survived by two sisters, Wilma Ingalsbe of Buckeye, Ariz. and Mavis Ingalsbe of Table Grove, Ill; uncle, Wayne Smith of Danville; aunt, Dorotha Reese of Danville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; two brothers, Kenneth Smith and Arnold " Dean" Smith; sister, Loraine Andrews DeWeese; two nieces, Lori Mae Andrews and Marsha Lynn Ingalsbe; and nephew, Eric Savage. Arlene graduated from Alvin High School in 1940. She worked for several years at G. E. in Danville, until retiring in 1986. She had attended Sterling Christian Church and was a member of the Lake Holiday Hideaway Auxiliary. Arlene enjoyed reading, cooking, dogs, gardening and spending time with her family. A celebration of the life of Arlene Rice Morgan will begin at 10 a. m. Saturday, Feb. 12, at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home, with Pastor Gary Johnson officiating. Burial will follow the service in Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6-8 p. m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Danville Humane Society or to the donor's choice. on February 9, 2011.3
