Lt. Col. James Calvin Akers was buried at Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Dublin, Pulaski Co., Virginia.2,3 He married Sharon Kay Boone.1,2 Lt. Col. James Calvin Akers was born on July 1, 1940 at Graham, Young Co., Texas.1,2 He died on February 3, 2016 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 75.2 He Lt. Col. James C. "Jim" Akers, USAF Ret., 75, of Daleville, and formerly of Fork Union, died Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital following a long illness. Jim was born July 1, 1940 in Graham, Texas. He was the son of the late J.C. and Jessie M. O'Rear Akers and lived in Daleville for the last two years. Jim proudly served as a navigator in the United States Air Force and retired after 21 years of service. He served three tours of duty in Viet Nam, one year in Korea, and three years in Alaska. Jim recently retired as Director of Admissions for Fork Union Military Academy after 20 years of service, and is a member of Fincastle Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sharon K. Boone Akers; daughters and son-in-law, Melynda and Nizar Ghuneim of Concord, North Carolina, and Marci Akers of Matthews, North Carolina; and grandchildren, Jillian Ghuneim, and Jessica Ferguson. A memorial service will be held at Fork Union Baptist Church at a later date. Inurnment with full military honors provided by The United States Air Force Honor Guard will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday, February 10, 2016, at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery, 5550 Bagging Plant Road, Dublin, Virginia. on February 6, 2016.2

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Aunita Harroun Davis of Big Sandy; his daughters and son-in-law, Janice A. Davis of Houston and Johnita E. Matkins and Edmund of Houston; his sons and daughter-in-law, Byron A. Davis of Big Sandy and Denzil A. Davis and Marsha of Houston; two granddaughters, Alwanda Moore and Ashley L. Services will be held grave side at Lakeview Cemetery. where she will be laid beside her husband Elmer Fayne McDowell. Zella McDowell is survived by her son Fayne Arthur McDowell and wife Nicola of Colorado Springs, CO, her daughter Sharon Kay Autrey and husband Kenneth of Kilgore, and son James David McDowell and wife Paula of Forney, TX. She is also survived by 9 grand children and 20 great-grand children and 17 great-great-grand children. Zella was born in Jacksboro, Texas November 6, 1925. She lived most of her 95 years here in Longview. She loved children having taught preschool for over 20 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greggton. He was born May 23, 1924, in Electra, to Richard Fayne and Lois Denson McDowell. He had lived in Longview for the past 45 years and was a retired water plant supervisor for the City of Longview after 25 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Greggton First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years. He was also a graduate of Carlisle High School. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Zella of Longview; children, Fayne McDowell and his wife, Nicky of Colorado Springs, Colo., Sharon Kay Autrey and her husband, Kenneth of Kilgore, and James David McDowell and his wife, Paula of Forney; sister, Gloria Hamilton and her husband, Oscar of Tyler; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Aunita Davis of Houston. Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund at Greggton First Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. this evening, May 22, 2008, at the funeral home.
