His Social Security Number was 226-12-1417.8 Chauncey DePew "John D." Elmore was buried at Huffman Memorial Park (also known as Chestnut Grove Church Cemetery), Craig Co., Virginia.9 He He was called "John D." by most of his friends and a lot of his relatives. The nickname was due to the fact that in his younger days, he had the only car in the county and conducted himself as John D. Rockerfeller might have.
The following paragraphs prepared by his grandson, Bob Elmore, for a eulogy, described him quite well. "I am one of his grandsons. I never knew him as 'Grandpa', 'Papa' or 'Grandfather'. His name was 'Dad' to me - a name he was called by all of his family, including his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. My son called him 'Great Dad' and this descriptive naming was so very accurate. Grandparents have a way with their grandchildren and Dad was no exception. Children have the unique ability to read us for what we are. As a small child, I sensed something special between Dad and me. As I grew to be a man, that silent friendship and understanding grew with me. As we both grew older, we saw less and less of each other. Yet we would meet, sometimes in spans of years, look at each other and know - we still knew each other's secrets. I remember as a child my fascination with this tall, slender gentleman. He was like no other one I knew or have known since. He almost always was smoking a cigar; always wore a white shirt and hat. He did the sort of things that seemed different from other adults I knew: painted pictures, lettered signs, took hundreds of photographs and movies, had squirrels sit on his shoulder, took care of his own monkey, shot pool, performed magic tricks, played cards and checkers, and smiled a lot. He took time to teach me some of these things he enjoyed so much and I am grateful. I saw something different in him ten, maybe fifteen years ago. There was a sadness there I hadn't seen before. He seemed to miss many of his friends who were no longer living. Much of what he had left was only his family. His hurt came from the misfortune of never really learning how to express the love he had for this family in all the years of living with them. This seemed to be his biggest sorrow. One day not long ago he showed me that love while he lay in a hospital bed. I took the first step with this old friend of mine by kissing his forehead and telling him how much I loved him, something I had never done. Dad just lay there with tears in his eyes. Then he turned and reached out his hand to me. We looked at each other and a smile broke our silence. He had wanted for so long to do that with each of you, and he has in his own unique way. It was there - we only had to look for it. I'm happy today for him because I know he is in a place where he can express himself and everyone there knows how he feels. He's back with his old friends and he's enjoying making up the lost time for the missed card games. The only difference is that the hand he holds is there for all to see, and that's all he ever really wanted."
My brother and I lived with our grandparents until about 1954. As did all the grandchildren, we called him 'Dad' rather than 'Grandpa'. And he was a father to us since our parents were divorced and we never saw our father. He spent a lot of time with his daughter Joyce who lived in Roanoke, but generally came home on the weekends. When our grandmother became ill and needed constant care, he came home to stay and took care of her until she died. He used to take her for long drives because she loved to ride. The fact that she usually fell asleep didn't bother him - he just kept driving until she awoke and decided it was time to go home. As Bob says in the eulogy, 'Dad' wasn't like most adults. I don't think he ever really grew up - sort of a real-life Peter Pan. So all the kids felt a pull toward him. Even his own children never faulted him for some of the things he did and didn't do. He wasn't a good provider and much of the burden of raising the family fell to his wife. But he was the darling of them all and everyone loved him. When we moved back to New Castle in 1975, he decided he wanted to spend the summer with us. We were living in his house and he was living with Joyce in Roanoke. So he came to us for the summer of 1976. We sat on the front porch and watched the Bi-Centennial Wagon Train go by on its way to the fairgrounds for an overnight stay on the way to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. We talked and reminisced and had visits from his old friends and a lot of his relatives. I think he enjoyed his visit even though he was ill part of the time and was constantly in pain from the arthritis that had invaded his body. He enjoyed spending time with Greg and Mark, and they really got to know their great-grandfather. Dad and Greg played cards a lot. Greg continues to play rummy the way Dad taught him, but says he'll never be able to remember the hands everyone else holds the way Dad did. Dad also liked to play poker for small stakes. One of his great joys later in life was to be able to win money from Ray and Phyllis, it was never much since their betting limit was a dollar, but they always got very upset when they lost, and Dad enjoyed it to the fullest. He would laugh about it for days after their games.10 He was born on April 17, 1891 at New Castle, Craig Co., Virginia.2,9,8,5,1 He married Dolly Ann Leffel, daughter of John Jesse Wade Leffel and Nancy Virginia Caldwell, on November 22, 1911 at Roanoke, Virginia.5 Chauncey DePew "John D." Elmore died on January 30, 1980 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 88.9
