She was known for her wonderful country cooking, her love of gardening and canning fruits and vegetables, and caring for her family and friends, which kept her busy most of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Ashley Cox Staples; her parents, Bertha James Cannaday and Sarah Lelia Thomas Cannaday; eight siblings, Ida Vest, Eldridge Cannaday, Ibra Lucas, Dewey Cannaday, Anna Bell Radford, Blanche Sloan, Thomas Cannaday, and Raymond Cannaday. She is survived by her daughter, Sarah Staples Gray and her husband, Douglas, of Hampton; granddaughter, Angie Gilley and her husband, J.R; great-grandchildren, Katie and Ryan, of Yorktown; sister, Doris Baker and her husband, Paul; sister-in-law, Frances Cannaday, of Christiansburg; an "adopted" daughter and son, Sue and Jake Pope, of Christiansburg; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be held at Horne Funeral Home 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2013.
