She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Robin Scott Blackburn (Randal) and True Ray (Richard), granddaughter, Heather, four great grandchildren, two sisters, Virginia Shearon of Richmond, VA and Peggy Greene (Roy) of Greenville, several nieces and nephews and a very dear friend, Betty Jeter. on April 22, 2012.8

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Ashley Cox Staples; her parents, Bertha James Cannaday and Sarah Lelia Thomas Cannaday; eight siblings, Ida Vest, Eldridge Cannaday, Ibra Lucas, Dewey Cannaday, Anna Bell Radford, Blanche Sloan, Thomas Cannaday, and Raymond Cannaday. She is survived by her daughter, Sarah Staples Gray and her husband, Douglas, of Hampton; granddaughter, Angie Gilley and her husband, J.R; great-grandchildren, Katie and Ryan, of Yorktown; sister, Doris Baker and her husband, Paul; sister-in-law, Frances Cannaday, of Christiansburg; an "adopted" daughter and son, Sue and Jake Pope, of Christiansburg; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be held at Horne Funeral Home 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2013. The funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday, April 8, at the Christiansburg Church of the Brethren, 310 South Franklin Street. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg. The family thanks the staff and caregivers at Commonwealth Assisted Living in Christiansburg and Hampton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alverta's memory to the American Heart Association , the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, or your favorite charity or organization. on April 6, 2013.3
