A private graveside memorial service was held 2:00 p.m. Saturday in Greenview Cemetery with Rev. Bruce Day officiating. A native of Rockingham County, he was a son of the late William Edward and Ada Likens Barnard. He served with the 101st Airborne and the 7th Special Forces 187th Regimental Combat for three years and later retired from the U.S. Navy with 22 total years of honorable service. Following his military service he was employed with Fieldcrest Mills in Eden, N.C. until his retirement. Surviving are wife, Virginia Sumner Barnard of the home; one step-son, Jeffery L. Jinnett and wife Barbara of Knoxville, TN; three step-daughters, Jaki J. Day and husband Bruce of Rome, Ga., Robin J. Porter and husband Clyde of Fairfax, Va. and Jill J. Daniel and husband Steve of Reidsville, N.C; one brother, Weldon Barnard of Reidsville, N.C; three sisters, Ramona B. Southard of Reidsville, N.C., Linda B. Land of Stoneville, N.C. and Nancy B. Toler of Reidsville, N.C; eight step-grandchildren. The family received friends at the home of his step-daughter, Jill Daniel, 1108 Arbor Lane, Reidsville, N.C. Conner, on June 11, 1927 at Roanoke, Virginia.1,5,2 Edna Laura Beckleheimer died on July 14, 2003 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 95.3,1,6,4 She SUMNER, Edna Beckleheimer, 95, of Roanoke, entered into the peaceful rest on Monday, July 14, 2003 to await the second coming of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Marion C. Sumner; a son, Erwin C. Sumner; and seven sisters. Mrs. Sumner was a member of Basham Primitive Baptist Church for 70 years. She was employed by American Viscose Corporation for many years and was also employed by the Roanoke County School System, from which she retired. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Carlton and Ruby Sumner; a daughter-in-law, Donna Sumner; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ethel Gilmer and Ruby Walters, both of Roanoke; and many nieces and nephews. Interment will follow in Basham Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. on July 16, 2003.1

She was born in Franklin County, Virginia September 5, 1935 to the late Elisha and Lillie Emberson Holley. Also preceding her in death were her husband of 47 years, Carlton C. Sumner Sr., in September of this year and two brothers and their wives, Allen and Audrey Holley, James R. and Ann L. Holley. She is survived by three nieces and one nephew, Carol Bussey, Rebecca Dillon, Joseph Holley and Regina Clark and their families. Ruby was a registered nurse who received her training in Lynchburg and after graduation lived there while working at Lynchburg General Hospital. After her marriage she moved to Roanoke and worked at Lewis Gale Medical Center until her retirement. She faithfully attended the Primitive Baptist Church until her health prevented her from doing so. Funeral service will be on Saturday, January 1, 2022 at 1 p.m. at Town Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Henry, Virginia officiated by Elder Junior Conner. Burial will immediately follow at the Town Creek Cemetery. on December 31, 2021.3
