Wallace "Sam" Willard died on March 28, 2003 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia, at age 81.^2,7,5,6 He WILLARD, SAMUEL E., 81, of Christiansburg, Va., died Friday, March 28, 2003, after a long bout with cancer and other medical problems. He was able to live at home for much of his illness, but was admitted to the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salem, Va. several weeks ago. A native of Christiansburg, Mr. Willard served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, in China, Burma and India. He lived in Christiansburg for most of his life and retired from Harvey Chevrolet Corporation in 1983. Mr. Willard was an avid foxhunter and he bred, raised, and sold foxhounds for many years. Dogs and hunting were his passion. Mr. Willard was born in Rogers, Virginia to the late Larry S. and Mary G. Willard on August 16, 1921. He was also predeceased by a brother, Nenry N. Willard. He was a faithful member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Christiansburg. He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Katie Nolley Willard; two daughters, Rita Willard O'Rourke of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Lynn Willard Ward of North Tazewell, Virginia; two sons, Garry Thomas Willard and Barry Wallace Willard, of Christiansburg; three sisters, Reba Willard Lawrence, Mary Catherine Willard Lutz and Mildred Willard Walters, all of Christiansburg; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 Monday evening at the Horne Funeral Home, Christiansburg. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, in the Horne Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Sebert Rorrer with interment to follow in Sunset Cemetery. Since Sam loved dogs so much, the family suggests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Humane Society, 1183 Flannagan Drive, Christiansburg, Va. 24073. Arrangements are being handled by Horne Funeral & Cremation Service, Christiansburg, Va. (540-382-2612) on March 30, 2003.²

He was born March 8, 1937 at Riner. He loved everyone and had many friends. He served in the Virginia National Guard for eight years and retired from the Radford Arsenal in 1990. He was a longtime and faithful member of Park United Methodist Church in Christiansburg. Surviving are his wife, Doris Rush Martin; one son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Edwina Martin, Riner; one daughter and son-in-law, Lori and David Mitcham, Riner; four special grandsons, Josh and J. C. Mitcham, Christopher and Adam Martin, all of Riner; a special granddaughter, Emily Mitcham, Riner; his father and mother, Garnett and Beulah Martin, Riner; one sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Jack Smith, Riner; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Norma Martin, Stanley and Ellen Martin, all of Riner; and numerous nieces and nephews. Interment will follow in Sunset Cemetery. on February 28, 1997.⁷
