Robert Wade 'Bob" Martin Sr. Robert “Bob” Martin, 99, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday morning, April 8, 2020. He was born June 5, 1920 to Gaspard M. Martin and Clara Nichols Stamback in Patrick County. He was a marksman in the U.S. Army during WWII, participating in the campaign of France and Germany, where he was wounded on the front line. He earned two bronze stars and a purple heart. After returning from the war, he went into his dream job of refinishing and rebuilding automobiles. He was employed the longest at Berglund Chevrolet, starting there when it was Diamond Chevrolet. He later enjoyed going to work for Grumman Emergency, where he retired. Robert was a long-time member of Rockingham Court United Methodist Church where he enjoyed working with the youth for many years. He loved his church and church family and just spending time with them. In his spare time, he enjoyed drawing and reading. He especially enjoyed reading the Bible over and over.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his mother and father-in-law, Reverend and Mrs. Christian (Louise) Wickham, wife Virginia Marie Wickham Martin, brothers Frank H. Martin and George W. Martin, sister Janie Stamback Montague and son-in-law Larry E. Skeens. Left to cherish his memory are his children, sons Robert W. Martin, Jr.- Roanoke, Billy W. Martin (Becky)-Blue Ridge and daughter Patricia (Pat) Martin Skeens - Roanoke, brothers Archie (Ursel) Martin of Vinton, Nelson (Pat) Martin of Wirtz, and sister Millie (Glenn) Brown of College Station, Texas. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, Robin Belcher–California, Robert Creasy-Covington, Kevin Martin-PA, Allison Doss (Chris)-Roanoke, Billy Martin Jr-Blue Ridge, Tammy Faw-Vinton and Scott Faw (Tiffany)-Roanoke. His is also survived by 9 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren. Because of the current pandemic, a private graveside service will be held on Friday, April 10. A memorial service will be held at a later date. A funeral service will be held at Rockingham Court United Methodist Church Thursday, August 27, 10 a.m., with the Rev. Jo Ellen Hetherington officiating. Interment in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, Larry requested donations be made to the Piano Fund at Rockingham Court United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends Wednesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. on August 26, 1998.3
