Mrs. Evans was a diligent worker who retired after 34 years of employment at Liggett Myers Tobacco Company. She was a strong Christian woman and faithful member of First Baptist Church in Durham. Surviving Mrs. Evans are her daughter, Sandra Rexrode of Swansboro, N.C; her sister, Faydeen Westmoreland of Salem, Va; her grandchildren: David William Rexrode and wife, Lisa, of Durham and Teresa Rexrode Capps of Cary; and two great-grandchildren: Travis William Rexrode and Robert Frederick Rexrode, both of Durham. Mrs. Evans was preceded in death by her husbands, Howard Neal Gearhart and Edward J. Evans. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 14, from the Chapel of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service with the Reverend W.E. Ferrell presiding. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Friends may visit in the funeral home before the service from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Flowers are acceptable or contributions in Mrs. Evan's name may be made to Freedom House Recovery Center, 104 New Stateside Drive, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27516. on December 12, 2006.1

She was born September 3, 1920 in Waynesboro, Va., the daughter of Thomas R. and Gertie Johnson Higgs. Her husband, Lester B. Gearhart, preceded her in death. She was a life member of Calvary Baptist Church, in Roanoke, for 76 years. She sang in the Calvary choir for 42 years. She was a member of the BWC, president of the Roanoke County Women's Club, member of the 49ers Plus Club, sang with the Salem Senior Singers and also played in the band at the Salem Senior Center. She worked in the Roanoke County Commissioner of Revenue office for 32 years and did volunteer work with the American Red Cross. Her battle with Alzheimer has now ended and she can now sing with the choir of angels. She is survived by her daughter, Doris Gearhart Smith-Duncan and husband, W. Daniel Duncan; two sisters, Fleeta Jane Pendleton and husband, James of Salem, Phyllis Higgs Chapman of Raleigh, N.C; and brother, Benton F. Higgs, Sr. and wife, Ginny of Salem. She will be missed by numerous nieces and nephews. Morning funeral services will be at Lotz in Salem on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at 11 a.m., with interment in Sherwood immediately following. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lotz Salem Chapel. on July 6, 2004.1
