     Benjamin Vernon Gibson Sr. Benjamin Vernon Gibson, Sr., 82, of Roanoke, passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2017. He was born in Botetourt, VA to the late Wiltsie Willis Gibson and Violet May Moran. He was also predeceased by his sons, Ricky L. and Michael B. Gibson; brothers, Robert Jack Gibson, Willis Maynard Gibson, and sister, Ruby G. Roberts. He worked for Johnson-Carper/Singer Furniture Company as a supervisor for 44 years. Surviving family includes his wife, Linda A. Wray; son, Benjamin (Nikkie) V. Gibson, II; step-children, Tony Satterwhite and Tracy (Erasmo) S. Casares; brothers, Wayne (Juanita) Gibson and Donnie Gibson; sister, Phyllis (JB) Powell; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.² He was buried at Mountain View Cemetery, 1300 Mountain View Road, Vinton, Roanoke Co., Virginia.⁵ He was born on August 20, 1934 at Cloverdale, Botetourt Co., Virginia.^1,5,4 He married Betty Jean Miles, daughter of Ellis Everette Miles and Gay Ola Hall, on May 23, 1953 at Cloverdale, Botetourt Co., Virginia.¹ Benjamin Vernon Gibson Sr. and Betty Jean Miles were divorced on April 7, 1971 at Roanoke Co., Virginia.³ Benjamin Vernon Gibson Sr. died on August 12, 2017 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 82.^2,5

     Michael Benny Gibson was buried at Fair View Cemetery, 3300 Melrose Ave. N.W., Roanoke, Virginia.⁴ He Michael Benny Gibson, 55, Roanoke, went to be with the Lord on Sunday August 30, 2015. He was born May 10, 1960 to Benjamin Vernon Gibson and the late Betty Jean Miles Burnette. He is survived by his father a son, Justin Gibson; step-mother, Linda Gibson and ex-wife, Michelle Gibson. Graveside services will be held at Fair View Cemetery.⁴ He and Lillian Michelle Murray were divorced.⁴ Michael Benny Gibson was born on May 10, 1960 at Roanoke, Virginia.^4,5,6,7 He married Helena Yvonne Abbott on May 1, 1981 at Roanoke, Virginia.⁵ Michael Benny Gibson and Helena Yvonne Abbott were divorced on June 10, 1985 at Roanoke, Virginia.⁶ Michael Benny Gibson married Judy Valerie Huffman on May 9, 1987 at Vinton, Roanoke Co., Virginia.⁵ Michael Benny Gibson and Judy Valerie Huffman were divorced on December 23, 1993 at Roanoke, Virginia.⁶ Michael Benny Gibson married Lillian Michelle Murray on October 31, 2009 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.⁵ Michael Benny Gibson died on August 30, 2015 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 55.⁴

     Mae Unknown was buried at Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford, Jackson Co., Oregon.² Her married name was Hammack.¹ She married Lloyd V. Hammack, son of Clyde Leroy Hammack and Mary Evelyn Unknown.^1,3 Mae Unknown was born in 1914 at Oregon.^1,2 She died on April 22, 1961 at Jackson Co., Oregon.³

     Arthur E. Carlson was buried at Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford, Jackson Co., Oregon.² His Social Security Number was 552-09-8499.³ He was born on March 29, 1917.^3,2 He married Kathleen Lavonne Hammack, daughter of Clyde Leroy Hammack and Mary Evelyn Unknown, on December 28, 1946 at Jackson Co., Oregon.^1,4 Arthur E. Carlson died on March 1, 1970 at Oregon at age 52.²

     Her Social Security Number was 226-34-6356.⁷ Juanita Ann "Nita" Smith was buried at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, Virginia.⁵ She was born on September 27, 1929 at Selma, Alleghany Co., Virginia.^1,5,7 As of July 15, 1950,her married name was Gerringer.⁴ She married Hugh Elkins Gerringer on July 15, 1950 at Scottsburg, Halifax Co., Virginia.^1,4,5 Juanita Ann "Nita" Smith died on January 16, 2013 at Newport News, Virginia, at age 83.^1,5,7 She NEWPORT NEWS - Juanita S. "Nita" Gerringer, aged 83, died peacefully on January 16, 2013 at home with her family by her side after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Nita was born September 27, 1929, in Selma, VA the daughter of William O. Smith and Hattie Masters. She moved to the Peninsula in 1938 and was a long time resident of Newport News. She was married in 1950 to Hugh E. Gerringer whom she loved and cared for until his death in 2007. She devoted her life to caring for others and considered her greatest accomplishments to be raising her daughters, Linda and Pam, and providing a warm and loving home for them and her husband of 57 years. She took great joy in seeing her family thrive and expand. She loved her son-in-law, Gene Roberts, as though he was truly her own son. She delighted in the birth and lives of her granddaughters, Lindsey and Shelby, and rejoiced in their lives, accomplishments and marriages. She then found a new love of her life in Brayden her great grandson. She welcomed a second son-in-law this summer and knew that her family was complete and cared for. Her caring extended beyond her immediate family to her family of brothers and sisters in Christ at Orcutt Baptist Church where she had been a member for over 60 years. She served in many capacities in her church until her health would no longer allow her to. She also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and The Peninsula Rescue Mission. She had a wonderful group of friends who were always helping each other throughout life. Nita leaves a legacy of love, faith and courage to those who survive her - her daughters Linda House and Robbie of Virginia Beach, and Pam Roberts and Gene of Newport News, along with her granddaughters Shelby Anderson and Corey of Burleson, TX and Lindsey Bombelyn and Brian and her very special great grandson Brayden Roberts of Newport News. She is also survived by her extended family of brothers Jim Smith and Mary of Washington, and Al Masters and Paige of Newport News, brother-in-law and sisters-in-law Carr and Marie Gerringer of Newport News, Nell Gerringer of Hampton and Ruth Gerringer of Newport News and Betty Youens of Newport News along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters-in-law Robert and Anne Smith and William Smith; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law Raymond and Pauline Gerringer, A. Harper Gerringer, and J. Earl Gerringer. Everyone who knew Nita considered her a true lady. She had a loving and caring influence on all who met her. She lived a simple life and enjoyed the simple things that her life revolved around-her family, her faith, and her friends. She loved to watch and hear the birds in her yard, enjoyed the company of the ladies in her card group and became an avid reader when she no longer could make an impact on the outside world. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, January 19th at Orcutt Baptist Church followed by a reception at the church. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, she requested donations be made to Orcutt Baptist Church Capital Improvement Fund, 653 Baxter Lane, Newport News, VA 23602 or the American Cancer Fund. The family would like to thank all those who visited, prayed, called, or sent cards to Nita during her extended illness.      James Francis "Jim" Smith was born on December 17, 1925 at Selma, Alleghany Co., Virginia.^5,6,7,8 He married Mary Hardy on October 11, 1947 at Weiser, Washington Co., Idaho.^6,9 James Francis "Jim" Smith died on September 24, 2013 at McMinnville, Yamhill Co., Oregon, at age 87.⁸ He James F. Smith passed away peacefully with his family at his side on September 24, 2013, at his home in McMinnville. James was born December 17, 1925, in Clifton Forge, VA, to William and Hedy (Hancock) Oliver. He served in the U.S. Navy in WW II in the South Pacific, as well as serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Surviving are his wife, Mary E. Smith; daughter, Maryann Taylor, and son-in-law, Scott Taylor, and daughter, Glenda Ritchardson, and son-in-law, Bob Ritchardson; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. James was preceded in death by a son, James F. Smith Jr. on September 27, 2013.⁸

     Robert Lane Smith was buried at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, Virginia.^11,9 His Social Security Number was 229-16-1981.¹² He married Elizabeth Anne Cosby.⁵ Robert Lane Smith was born on January 25, 1923 at Hopewell, Virginia.^{12,11,6,7,13,8,9} He died on November 1, 1992 at Newport News, Virginia, at age 69.^12,11,13,9

     His Social Security Number was 228-12-3158.⁹ William Oliver Smith Jr. was born on January 15, 1921 at Clifton Forge, Alleghany Co., Virginia.^5,6,9 He married Delma Dean Bowman on January 11, 1945 at Warwick Co., Virginia.⁷ William Oliver Smith Jr. died on November 17, 1986 at Adams Co., Washington, at age 65.⁸

     Elizabeth Anne Cosby was buried at Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, Virginia.² Her married name was Smith.¹ She married Robert Lane Smith, son of William Oliver Smith Sr. and Hattie Belle Hancock.¹ Elizabeth Anne Cosby was born on January 6, 1924 at Elizabeth City, Virginia.^4,1,2,5 She died on January 8, 2005 at Newport News, Virginia, at age 81.^1,4,2,6 She Anne Cosby Smith, 81, died Jan. 8, 2005. She was a native of Newport News and was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lane Smith. Mrs. Smith grew up in the East End section of the city and lived in the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh D. Turner of Hampton Avenue, until she met and married her late husband. Her mother was the late Alice Turner Cosby. Mrs. Smith was a member of North Riverside Baptist Church where she was a teacher of the Lydia Sunday School class for many years. She was a former deacon of the church and a past president of the WMU in which she held various offices. For many years, Mrs. Smith helped her husband in their family business, the Peninsula Dental Laboratory. Most of her life was devoted to raising her three children. She had many nice trips which included a trip to the Holy Land and a trip through Turkey retracing the Apostle Paul's steps. Survivors include two sons, Robert Kyle Smith and his wife, Ellen, of Oakton, Va., and Richard Craig Smith and his wife, Gail, of Mechanicsville, Va; and one daughter, Barbara Harris and her husband, Stan, of Suffolk, Va. There remain also four grandsons, Kyle, Tyler and Andrew Smith and Justin Ballou; and a step-granddaughter, Devon Harris. She is also survived by a special sister-in-law, Nita Gerringer and her husband, Hugh; two nieces and several cousins. A funeral service will be held at her beloved church, North Riverside Baptist Church, 311 Selden Road, Newport News, on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m. with Dr. Quentin T. Madden officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 10, at Peninsula Funeral Home.
