Harry Wellington, who served as dean of the law school from 1975 to 1985, died Aug. 8 in New York. With expertise in both constitutional and labor law, Wellington left a legacy at Yale and at New York Law School, where he served as dean for eight years after retiring from Yale in 1992. "Harry was a serene presence in the Law School. He possessed a character notable for its integrity and clarity. He illuminated everything and everyone he touched," Yale Law School Dean Robert Post '77 said in a news release. A native of New Haven, Wellington joined the faculty at the Yale Law School in 1956 after teaching at Stanford Law School for a year. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1947 and went on to get his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1952. For a time, he served as a law clerk to U.S. Circuit Judge Calvert Magruder and later to Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter. After joining the law school at Yale, Wellington was quickly promoted to associate professor in 1957 and full professor in 1960. He was named Sterling Professor in 1983, while he was serving as dean of the law school. "Harry Wellington was as good a scholar, teacher, and dean as the Yale Law School has ever had. He was also a wonderful person and a dear, dear friend," Sterling Professor Emeritus of Law Guido Calabresi, '58, said in a news release. Calabresi served as dean of Yale Law School after Wellington. Wellington was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Law Institute and had been a Ford and Guggenheim Fellow, and a senior fellow of the Brookings Institution. He is survived by his wife, Sheila; two sons, John and Thomas; a daughter-in-law, Lenni Benson; and two grandchildren, Max and Lily Wellington. on August 15, 2011.2

Stanley Lebergott1,2

Stanley Lebergott was born on July 22, 1918 at Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan.3,2 He married Ruth L. Wellington, daughter of Alexander Mendel "Alex" Wellington and Jeanne L. "Jean" Ripps, in 1941.2 Stanley Lebergott died on July 24, 2009 at Middletown, Middlesex Co., Connecticut, at age 91.3,1 He Stanley Lebergott, the Chester D. Hubbard Professor of Economics and Social Sciences, Emeritus, died July 24 after a long illness. He was 91 years old. Lebergott began his career as a public servant, working for 20 years in the U.S. Department of Labor, the International Labor Office, and the U.S. Bureau of the Budget. He joined the Wesleyan faculty in 1962 as a professor of economics, becoming University Professor in 1970. He was a pivotal scholar in his field, and a prolific author. In addition to more than 50 articles, his books include: Manpower in Economic Growth: The American Record Since 1800 (McGraw Hill, 1964); Men Without Work (Prentice Hall, 1964); The American Economy: Income, Wealth, and Want (Princeton, 1976); The Americans: An Economic Record (Norton, 1984); Pursuing Happiness: American Consumers in the Twentieth Century (Princeton, 1993); and Consumer Expenditures: New Measures and Old Motives (Princeton, 1996). His colleague at Wesleyan, Peter Kilby, professor of economics, emeritus, wrote about Lebergott’s scholarship: “The Lebergott scholarly paradigm is a distinctive one. The conventional paradigm entails placing the problem in context, reviewing the ruling interpretations, setting out an appropriately specified model, and concluding with an evaluation of econometric results. Lebergott, by contrast, moves directly to the quiddity of the problem itself. With unusual clarity of vision he isolates three or four key ingredients, and then proceeds with shattering simplicity to conceive a single measure—typically one painstakingly constructed from unconventional sources—that captures the direction and force of the underlying cause.” Lebergott is survived by his wife, Ruth, and daughter, Karen. A memorial service will be planned for fall. In lieu of flowers, his family prefers donations to the scholarship being established in his memory at Wesleyan University. Memorial gifts may be sent to Wesleyan University, 318 High Street, Middletown, CT 06459. on August 6, 2009.1

Born and raised in Hollywood, CA, Joyce graduated from Hollywood High School, where she was the main accompanist for choir and stage productions. In 1942, already an accomplished performer at age 17, Joyce joined the USO and had the time of her life. She toured the European and Pacific Theaters, and the USA, entertaining the troops. Upon her return to California, Joyce was briefly married to Arthur Ripley, Jr. Shortly thereafter she met Irving Bramberg. They were married in 1952, and for nearly 50 years they lived in the High Tower neighborhood (known for the landmark Tower Elevator), befriending many artistic and musical celebrities. She was a marquee performer at the piano bars of some of LA's top clubs and hotels until retiring in the 1980's, and one of the founding members of, and accompanist for, the War Babies improv group. Joyce was always the sunniest spot in the room, and she had only to meet you to befriend you. In 2003, She and Irv moved to Park LaBrea, where she became the accompanist for their singing groups and joined a writing group to work on her memoirs. Unfortunately, she was widowed in 2007, even as she began to fall victim to senile dementia, and moved to Melrose Gardens in 2009, where her good humor, grace and piano playing made her a favorite of staff, residents and visiting performers. Until nearly the end, she still could play hundreds of standards from memory and improvise blues with the best of them. She brought music and happiness to thousands, and was friend, artistic inspiration, and confidante to her nieces and nephews. She will be sorely missed. She is survived by her sister, Shirlee Byrd, nieces and nephews, and grand- and great-grand-nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial service in the next few months, to be announced. on April 29, 2014.5
