Walter Edward Boyer passed away at the Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz., on May 6, 2005. He was 84 years old. Mr. Boyer was born in Douglas, Ariz., on Aug. 14, 1920, to Napoleon and Charlotte Frances Boyer. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Linda (Richard) Wimmer of Mesa, Ariz., as well as two sisters and their husbands, Dorothy (Norman) Wilson of Safford, Ariz., and Josephine (Luther) Thomas of Tucson, Ariz. Also surviving him are his faithful companions Bebe (dog) and Spanky (bird). Mr. Boyer worked for the CCC and Southern Pacific Railroad prior to joining the U.S. Army in 1944 and served until 1945. He was a World War II veteran. He is a recipient of the Purple Heart and numerous other medals. Mr. Boyer made his home in Bisbee, Ariz., from the late 1950s until the time of his passing. He was employed by Phelps Dodge Corp. until his retirement. He was an active member of the Senior Center as well as the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He loved to fish and play poker. Our families wish to express our sincere gratitude to Audrey Haubert, his dear friend who helped him so much during his final days. At Mr. Boyer's request there will be no services. He wished to be cremated. Bisbee Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Walter (Walt) grew up with his sister Nona in Prescott. He attended Prescott schools and graduated high school. Walter joined the Air Force in 1949 and was stationed at Grenier Air Force Base in Manchester, N.H., where he was trained in Morse code and radio operation for the signal corps. Walt was deployed to Korea from March 1952 to February 1953 and was one of the Mosquitos in the 6147th Tactical Air Control Squadron. Walt returned stateside to George Air Force Base in Victorville, Calif., and was honorably discharged in November 1953. While still in the Air Force, Walt married the love of his life, Barbara June Robertson, on Aug. 16, 1953. Walt worked several jobs in Prescott including working for the City of Prescott at the police desk before joining the Arizona Department of Transportation, where he worked for 31 years before retiring in 1987. During his career at ADOT, Walt recalled doing everything from working brush, fixing potholes, and building fences, but he most remembered long hours plowing snow every winter and being the full-time truck driver of the Prescott unit's 18-wheeler flatbed equipment transport truck. Walt is survived by his wife Barbara of 58 years; son Ralph and daughter-in-law Mickey; daughter Linda Burton and son-in-law Steve; and daughter Laura Bender and son-in-law Jim. He is also survived by grandchildren Kris Bender, Thomas and Michael Burton, Nathan Dickison, Brian Dickison and his wife Jen, and Katie Gibbons and her husband John. Walt was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The family wishes to thank the Hospice Family Care Inc. and their special caregivers for wonderful care and heartfelt compassion during Walt's final weeks. A military honor service will be at Prescott National Cemetery Columbarium 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011. on December 10, 2011.3

Deputy McMurren was standing on the top of a hill and shining his light towards the suspect's location. The suspect, a former sharpshooter for the Marine Corps, shot Deputy McMurren in the chest using the light from the flashlight as a point of reference. The suspect was apprehended and sentenced to life in prison. Deputy McMurren was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and had served with the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office for only six months. He had previously served with the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Police Department for 13-1/2 years. McMurren of Yavapai County; a brother, William, of Williams; and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Lee of Flagstaff and one out of state. on June 26, 1973.3
