     Maude Ella Neese was buried at Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Wellington, Collingsworth Co., Texas.¹ She Mrs. W. T. Poff, who had lived in the Wellington area 64 years, died in Thomas Nursing Home Friday, December 28, at 10:05 pm after a long illness. She was 91. She and her family lived in the Midway community east of town until the late Mr. Poff retired from farming. A member of the United Methodist church, Mrs. Poff was active in its work from early life until she was no longer able to attend services. For many years she was active in the Women's Society of Christian Service. Born in Macon County, Georgia, August 29, 1882, she was the former Maude Ella Neese, daughter of Franklin and Aurelia Griffin Neese. She came with her family to Texas as a teen-age girl, settling at Barry, near Corsicana. She came to Collingsworth County in 1909. She was married first to Tom Goswick, and after his death, she was married to W. T. Poff in 1915. Besides her interest in her church, Mrs. Poff devoted herself to her family and her work as a farm wife. Funeral services were conducted at First United Methodist Church at 2:30 pm Sunday, with the Rev. James Boswell officiating. Burial was in Memorial Gardens under the direction of Kelso Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Hubert Mauldin, Harold Caldwell, Joe Sanders, Robert Posey, George Scott, and Odas Benson of Hershey, Nebraska. Survivors are a son, L E Goswick; a step son, Aubrey Poff of Denham Springs, La; two daughters, Mrs. W. C. Sanders of Tulia and Mrs. Mary Belew; a sister, Mrs. Edgar Lockhart; 21 grandchildren and a large number of great grandchildren.¹

Burial will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery by Adams Funeral Home. Mrs. Belew was born and raised in Wellington. She graduated from Wellington High School in 1939. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church. She married Arthur Belew in 1948 at Wellington. He died in 1969. Survivors include five sons, Leroy Belew and Kenneth Patterson, both of Wellington, Donnie Belew of Tucson, Ariz., Tom Belew of New Orleans and Alton Belew of Glen Rose; six daughters, Evelyn Jarvis of New Orleans, Betty Langford of Wellington, Quinda Miller of Fairview, Okla., Janis Duerfeldt of Tucson, Pat Johnson of Oklahoma and Linda Menge of Guthrie, Okla; 38 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.⁵ She married Jack Quinton Patterson.² Mary Frances Poff was born on July 25, 1922 at Wellington, Collingsworth Co., Texas.^4,5 As of 1948,her married name was Belew.⁵ She married Arthur Leroy Belew in 1948.⁵ Mary Frances Poff died on January 29, 1988 at Texas at age 65.^4,5

He was stricken ill at his home and was dead on arrival at St. Joseph's Hospital. Mr. Belew was one of the first men in this area to go into the custom combine business, and continued to operate it until his death. He had worked northward in the wheat harvest this summer as he did each year. Along with it, he was also a partner in a farm equipment business for a number of years. Earlier, he farmed in the Loco community for many years. Born Nov. 28, 1010, in Montague County, he was the son of G.D. Belew of Wellington and the late Mrs. Fannie Belew. He came here, along with other members of his family, in 1931 from Grayson County. Surviving Mr. Belew are his wife, Mrs. Mary Belew, five sons and five daughters: Kenneth Patterson and Alton Belew of Wellington, Leroy Belew of Pampa, Donnie Belew of White Deer, and Jerry Belew and Mrs, J. L. Jarvis of Grenla, La, Mrs. Doyle Winegeart of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Jimmy Langford and Miss Linda Belew of Wellington, and Miss Patricia Belew of Wichita, Kansas. Other survivors are his father, G. D. Belew of Wellington; five brothers: Herman Belew and T. P. Belew of Wellington, Grady Belew of Chnnnlng, Robert Belew and Weldon Belew of Oklahoma City; 24 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. on October 23, 1969.⁵

Linda was born April 9, 1953, in Wellington to Arthur and Mary Belew. Linda was a 1971 graduate of Wellington High School. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Wellington and loved her Lord, her family, friends and church family. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Arthur Leroy Belew and Mary Frances Poff Belew; and a sister, Evelyn Belew Jarvis. Survivors include a son, Ray Leon Menge Jr. and wife Julie of Clinton, Okla; a daughter, Samantha Abigail McConnell of Lubbock; three granddaughters, Mikaila, Taylor and Destiny, all of Lubbock; five brothers, Leroy Belew and wife Judy and Kenneth Patterson and wife Helen, all of Wellington, Donnie Belew and wife Nancy of Tucson, Ariz., Jerry "Tom" Belew of Carrollton, and Alton Belew and wife Joy of Glen Rose; four sisters, Betty Langford and husband Jimmy of Wellington, Janice Deurfeldt of Tucson, Quinda Miller of Fairview, Okla., and Patricia Roberson of Jay, Okla; and a host of nieces and nephews.      Oscar Mike Poff was buried at Portales Cemetery, 1600 E. 3rd Street, Portales, Roosevelt Co., New Mexico.^2,3 His Social Security Number was 525-58-0252.⁷ He was born on May 13, 1929 at Littlefield, Lamb Co., Texas.^2,7,3,4 He died on January 5, 2005 at Lubbock, Lubbock Co., Texas, at age 75.^2,7,3 He Mr. Oscar Poff, 75, of Portales, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock. He was born on May 13, 1929, in Littlefield, Texas, to Maude and James Michael Poff. He moved to Portales with his family in 1931. He was working on a ranch in Elida when he contracted Polio in 1949. After he was able to work again, he drove tractors for area farmers. He belonged to the University Baptist Church. Family members said he enjoyed playing dominos and working jigsaw puzzles and as long as he was able to go, he enjoyed hunting and fishing even though he was unable to walk. Family members said he was very outgoing and friendly and was always willing to render help to anyone with anything he was able to do. Since 1991 he had been a resident at Golden Acres where family members said he enjoyed the fellowship of many friends and he also enjoyed the time he spent at Portales Senior Citizens. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Millard, Cecil and Archie Poff; and three sisters, Lorene Turner, and Cleo and Velma Summers. Survivors include two sisters, Bertie Wallace and Opal Johnson, both of Portales; and his housekeeper and friend, Rita Ornelas of Portales. The Rev. M. V. Summers will officiate the services. Burial will be at Portales Cemetery. Pallbearers are Orvel Turner, Monty Johnson, Lynn Poff, Travis Johnson, John Wallace and William Summers. Honorary pallbearers are Emory Ferguson, Clifford Lee, the residents of Golden Acres, the members of Portales Senior Citizens, his friends from Adult Day Care along with all his other friends. Memorial contributions may be made to Wells Fargo Bank to help the family defray various expenses. Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales. on February 26, 2005.²
