Surviving family include a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Linda Epperly of Hardy; daughters and sons-in-law, Serita and Charles Fry of Roanoke, Delores and Harold Hall of Roanoke, Willa and Dan Angle of Rocky Mount and Tressia Detrich of Daleville; grandsons, Michael Fry of Roanoke, Stephen and wife, Karen of Stuart, Christopher and wife, India of Moneta and Andrew Angle of Rocky Mount; great-granddaughters, Connor, Piper and Skylar Epperly of Stuart; great-grandsons, Charlie and Andon Epperly of Moneta; sister-in-law, Lillian Helm of Elliston. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 9, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel in Salem with the Rev. Ken Nienke and Dr. Michael Curry officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 8, 2005 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Lillian Starkey Helm; son and daughter-in-law, Monroe (Jay) and Susan Helm, Salem; two daughters and son-in-law, Shelby Bowles, Cindy and Gary Hale, all of Elliston; four grandchildren, Jason and Eric Helm, Lindsey Hale and Zachary Bowles; one sister, Earnestine Epperly, Salem; numerous loving nieces, nephews, and friends, and a very special and devoted friend, Charles Bryant. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 1997, at the Elliston Church of God, Elliston, Va., with the Rev. Ronald King officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem, with Military Graveside Rites. The family will receive friends Monday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lotz Salem Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shawsville Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 14, Shawsville, Va. 24162. The family will also like to thank all the staff with HOUSECALL of Salem. on July 28, 1997.2

Her interests included baking and gardening. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Wallace Helm; parents, William and Josephine Starkey; and eight loved siblings. She is survived by her loving children and caregivers and include her son, Jay Helm and wife, Susan; daughters, Shelby Bowles and Cindy Hale and husband, Gary; grandchildren, Jason and Eric Helm, Lindsey Hale Ollis, and Zachary Bowles; great-grandchildren, Riley and Nate Ollis, and Carma Mitchen; and loving sisters, Beulah Akers and Evelyn Jones. Lillian was also blessed by many special nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. The family expresses sincere thanks to Richfield and Good Samaritan Hospice for their loving care. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 17, 2018, in the John M. Oakey & Son Chapel in Salem. The funeral service will directly follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ronald King and Chaplain Gary Kingery officiating. Burial will take place at Sherwood Memorial Park, also in Salem. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice at 2408 Electric Road in Roanoke, Va. 24018. on November 16, 2018.3

Jay was a devoted father and husband and he was a very outgoing person. He loved cooking, fishing and he enjoyed horses. Jay served in the U.S. Army for 8 years, he was a Specialist E5, 101St ABN DIV., FORSCOM. Declarations and Metals include, Sharp Shooter Firearms, National Defense Service. Jay was also a Food Service Specialist and a Head Kitchen Supervisor while serving in the Army. Jay was a member of the Salem Baptist Church and attended the Discovery Sunday School Class which he loved. He worked at Green Hill Meat Packing Co. He owned and operated several businesses including, Jay’s Service Center, Jay’s Saddle and Tack and The Blue Jay Restaurant. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace and Lillian Helm. He is survived by his loving wife, Susan of 47 years; sons, Jason and Eric; sisters, Shelby Bowles, and Cindy Hale and husband, Gary; sister-in-law, Donna Lundy and husband, Randy; aunts, Evelyn Jones, and Ruby Starkey; many nieces, nephews and cousins whom he loved dearly. The family will receive friends from 11 AM to 12 Noon on Thursday, April 1, 2021 at Salem Baptist Church at 103 N Broad St. Salem, VA. Left to cherish her memory are her son, Scott Brookman; cherished granddaughters, Madeline and Juliette Brookman; as well as many other family members and dear friends. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 19, 2021, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home Chapel. She will be laid to rest at Sherwood Memorial Park on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, at 11 a.m. on April 18, 2021.6

He was a member of Ridgewood Baptist Church and is now with his Savior Jesus Christ. Daddy is preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve Renee Ferris Poff (Weestie); his parents, Arthur Clayton and Margaret Barnett Williams Poff; and siblings Larry Douglas Poff and Judy Poff Sisson. He is survived by his beloved girls, Rhonda Sue Poff, Deborah Ann Poff Bradt, and Kimberly Renee Poff Siemon and husband Craig Douglas Siemon. He is also survived by his three dear grandchildren, Michael Logan Bradt, Megan Renee Bradt, and Gennavieve Renee Siemon. Daddy is also survived by many members of the Poff family; his sister Barbara Poff Brookman and husband Jack; nephews, Scott Brookman and wife Claudia and family and Paul Douglas Sisson; nieces, Vicki Poff and husband Paul and family and Amy Byers and husband Stephen and family. Daddy rejoiced in the blessing of a life filled with many caring and loving extended family, cousins, and friends. He will especially be missed by his devoted cousins, Dodo, Bud, Melissa, and Miles. Daddy had many hobbies including enjoying the CB radio, having initiated the VA Dogwood Citizens Band Club in the 1980's; following major league baseball and his favorite team, the Atlanta Braves; caring for family's sweets pets (Mikey); gardening, landscaping, and Cooking!!! Thanksgiving, your favorite holiday, Daddy, we will ALL miss your pecan pies. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 12, 2007 from the Chapel of John M. Oakey & Son, with the Reverend Roy Kanode officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park.
