Fletcher, who built one of the nation's top intramural and recreational sports programs at the University of Virginia, died Monday after returning from his morning run. He was 57. Fletcher was associate director of athletics and executive director of intramural/recreational sports. At least 94 percent of undergraduates participated in programs under Fletcher's watch during his tenure, according to the university. When Fletcher arrived at UVa in 1985, he supervised the university's two indoor recreational facilities and 12 full-time employees. Today, there are four major indoor centers, several outdoor facilities, more than 40 full-time workers and hundreds of part-time student employees. He also was responsible for all athletics facilities and operations at UVa from 1992 until 1997, and then supervised the $86 million expansion of Scott Stadium, completed in 2001. Among other projects he oversaw were the creation of the David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium; completion and lighting of Klockner Stadium; and the creation of the artificial turf competition field and renovated football practice fields at University Hall. Prior to coming to Charlottesville, Fletcher was assistant director of athletics and recreation at the University of Denver from 1981 to 1985. Before that, he was coordinator of intramural sports for the office of campus recreation at the University of Utah. From 1974 to 1976, he was an assistant men's basketball coach at Radford University. Fletcher, a native of Crestline, Ohio, earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and education in 1973 from Heidelberg College in Ohio. He earned a master's degree in college student personnel from Bowling Green State University. No information on the cause of Fletcher's death was available Tuesday. He is survived by his wife, Gina, and three children, Kristi, Lori and Scott. on June 10, 2009.7

She was born in Blacksburg, VA, on May 9, 1920 to the late Howard Grant and Virginia Strickler Helms. She was also preceded in death by her brother Harley Helms, and her sister, Helen Compton. Surviving are a daughter Nancy Payne Curtis, son in law Mark Curtis, grandson Sky Charles Curtis and sister Martha Helms. In addition she leaves behind nieces and nephews, Mary Page Payne Compton, Jim Payne, and D. Compton, Great nieces and nephews Sarah Casto, Ryan Burrowbridge, Adam Burrowbridge, Alan Compton and Lorie Walker as well as many others. Ruth retired from the Radford Arsenal after years of government service was a life long member of the Blacksburg Christian Church where she and Charles founded the Youth Group. Ruth served in the Blacksburg Fire Department Auxiliary. She held several positions after retirement, but was happiest in her role as grandmother. Known for her baking and her flowers, Ruth loved taking care of others, cooking and baking for her family and friends and making the world a prettier place to live. Sky was educated at Virginia Beach Friends School and was a 2007 graduate of First Colonial High School where he was a proud member of International Thespian Society Troupe 3178. After a year at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia, Sky spent some time in school in Blacksburg where he cared for his Grandmother, Ruth. He moved to California to work and returned when his Great Uncle Harley passed away, again to take care of his Grandmother. He then returned to Virginia Beach to literally be his Father's right hand after a shoulder surgery. He worked for many years with his father, Mark, most recently at Cinema Cafe. He was skilled at carpentry, electrical work, and all things theatre. Sky was a big teddy bear who lovingly helped his family and friends whenever they were in need and in whatever way they needed. His smile was big, his laugh was bigger, and his heart was biggest of all. Sky is survived by his parents, Nancy and Mark Curtis of Virginia Beach, Grandparents George Curtis and Doris and Dale Balducci, Godparents Mary and David Pomerson. He also leaves behind his aunts and uncles Lori and Dean Walls, Forrest & Nancy Curtis, Craig & Linda Curtis, and Lynn & Cathy Curtis. Surviving cousins include Sarah and Scot Casto, Ryan and Lindsay Burrowbridge, Adam and Sarah Burrowbridge, Steve and Nancy Compton, Gary and Sonja Compton, Jill and Rob Loy, Brian Walls, Russell Walls and Amy Stuppiello, Taylor Walls-Carr and Whitney Walls. His extended family and their children are Lauren Pomerson, Sarah Pomerson, Tyler and Delaney Compton, Bailey and Jazmine Compton, Collin Loy, Jada & Wayne Fingleton, Olivia Fingleton, Kayla Fingleton, Buddy Fingleton, Chad and Deserae Curtis, Samuel Curtis, Estella Curtis, John & Tiffany Curtis, Owen Curtis, Charles & Emily Curtis, Norah Curtis, Meredith Curtis, and James Curtis.
