She was born in Check, Va. on November 16, 1917 to the late Alonzo Valentine and Victoria Alice Poff Austin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William "Pete" R. Scott. "Miss Laura" taught in Montgomery County for 37 years. She was well loved by her students, their parents, and staff. She could always see her grown up students as they looked in the first grade. She often said, "Just as God never made a leaf alike, he never made a child that was like another one." After retiring from her teaching career, she went back to school and sold Real Estate for five years. She wasn't ready to retire yet, so she went back to school and obtained her C.N.A. and worked for Hospice. After this vocation, she started her own cake business and was known to many as the "cake lady." "Miss Laura" loved hats and seldom left the house without one. She was a faithful member of both the Blacksburg Christian Church and the Centennial Christian Church located in McCoy. She taught Sunday School at both churches for many years. "Miss Laura" often visited the sick, elderly and lonesome taking them one of her famous cakes. She lived a life dedicated to serving others and made her dreams come true. She is survived by a daughter, Victoria Mae Scott of Christiansburg; a son and daughter-in-law, Lon David and Eileen Scott of Mansfield, Mass; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Leo and Ruby Scott of McCoy; a brother-in-law, Cecil Whitaker of McCoy; two sisters-in-law, Iris Maddox of Texas and Agatha Austin of Check, Va; four grandchildren, Jay, Matt, Jenny and Laura; one great-grandchild, Justin; and a special friend, Jo Ann Bingham. A private graveside service will be conducted in the Scott Family Cemetery, McCoy. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 30, 2000 at 2 p.m. in the Centennial Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), McCoy. Friends may call anytime after 12 noon on Thursday and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg. In lieu of flowers, please take time to visit someone who is ill or lonely and take them a treat. Time is a precious commodity but I know that you will feel the joy of making another's day less lonely. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg. on July 28, 2000.1
